Chainsaw Man has finally delivered an action-packed chapter filled with violent and gory action, featuring the return of one of the most violent designs in the series thanks to the long-awaited return of the Chainsaw Devil’s true, terrifying form.
Along with it, the series also showcased Chainsaw Man’s strongest power: the ability to erase devils from existence, and the consequences it has for the entire world.
Chapter #172 continued with Denji transforming into the Hero of Hell and saw Pochita’s true form, called “Armored Chainsaw Man,” emerge after Denji witnessed Nayuta’s decapitated head. He was confronted by many hybrids and agents of Public Safety, but he was seemingly unstoppable.
One of the devils he immediately defeated was the Ear Devil, and Chainsaw Man proceeded to eat it.
The chapter ends with Yoru realizing that her ears had disappeared, meaning that all humans had lost their ears and hearing as a result of Chainsaw Man’s mysterious power of erasing the devils he eats from existence. This is a huge development that could really alter the series.
Chainsaw Man’s Pochita Erases the Ear Devil, Raising Stakes and Mysteries in Latest Chapter
What makes Pochita feared by all devils is that if he eats one, they are erased from existence completely, never to return to Hell or Earth. Since each Devil represents a human fear, when they disappear, the concept or things they are connected to are also gone forever, including things like nuclear weapons, a star, or even fates alternative to death.
This is why Makima, Yoru, and Fami were very interested in Denji, hoping to use his unique ability for themselves. Eating the Ear Devil means that everyone’s ears are erased from existence. It might be confusing that an Ear Devil exists, but it could be linked to humans’ fear of being overheard.
This isn’t the first time a human sense has been erased from existence by Chainsaw Man. Makima revealed to Kishibe that a sixth sense disappeared, likely after its devil was eaten by Chainsaw Man. What this sense was is unknown, but this new development could shed light on it given the similarities.
Although this development is very shocking, there is still a chance it could be reversed as the chapter ends with an agent saying Chainsaw Man was about to eat the Ear Devil. The situation is still grim considering how powerful Pochita is, and how the events unfold is very exciting.
Most importantly, Chainsaw Man’s ability to erase things from existence remains one of the biggest unexplained mysteries in the series. Seeing it happen in real-time for the first time means that, hopefully, the series is about to shed light on this and the other mysteries surrounding the powerful Chainsaw Devil.
