VH1 teamed up with superstar celebrity Kevin Hart and Jesse Collins Entertainment to revive a classic show with DC Young Fly as the host. We’re talking about a show that has had many iterations across the years. In 2023, we will see a Black culture-centered version of Celebrity Squares, the classic game show that captivated audiences across the years.
It is a winning formula worth exploring, and with the knack that current networks have for diversity, representation, inclusion, and the works, this new take on a classic show in the hands of a talented producer like Kevin Hart is the perfect opportunity to test out the show as a pilot with a debut season right a moment when the networks are testing out new shows.
Without any further ado, let’s break down Celebrity Squares 2023 for you, give you a few details about the show’s structure, and share some other bits of information so you’ll be well on your way as you tune in for this new competition game.
Premise
While the game’s prizes and rules have changed over time, some things have stayed mostly the same. Every match featured two competitors, one of whom played X and the other O. In the past, the matches were between men and women, with the men playing the X position and going by the nickname Mr. X, and the women playing the O position and going by the nickname Ms. Circle.
Usually, one of the competitors was a previous winner. Later iterations featuring a returning champion designate the challenger to occupy the O spot and the returning champion to occupy the X spot.
Each competitor chose a square in turn. The star in that square was asked a question and responded with a zinger that usually came before it. Depending on whether they believed the star was bluffing, the contestants could choose to disagree with the star’s response or agree with it.
Occasionally, a star was unable to think of a convincing bluff or knew the wrong answer to a question. In these cases, the contestant was given the opportunity to respond to the question, and their response determined whether they won or lost the square.
Typically, when a contestant declined, there was no penalty; instead, the same participant was asked another question to indicate whether or not they agreed.
A player had to collect enough squares early in the Marshall run to make it mathematically impossible for the opponent to get three in a row; however, it is possible to capture as many as six squares without preventing the opponent from getting a diagonal three in a row, which did happen in an early episode.
The goal was to complete either a tic-tac-toe pattern or to score as many squares as possible. The square was obtained by concurring with a star’s response. The square belonged to the opponent if the contestant did not correctly agree or disagree; however, if the opponent won by default, that was not permitted, the square remains open, and the opponent gets a shot.
