Capcom is taking an unusually involved approach to bringing Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2. Rather than simply reducing visual settings to make the demanding action RPG run on Nintendo’s hardware, the development team has been reassessing and rebuilding parts of the game to preserve its core experience.

Speaking to Kotaku, Monster Hunter Wilds producer Genki Sunano explained that the Switch 2 version was developed with the goal of delivering a version that still feels like the original game.

“The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds was developed around the concept of delivering a natural Monster Hunter Wilds experience on Nintendo Switch 2,”

Sunano said. Capcom specifically wanted to avoid making the game feel like a heavily downgraded version created simply to accommodate weaker hardware.

Switch 2 Version Targets 30 FPS in Handheld Mode

One of the clearest technical targets is 30 FPS in handheld mode, including during four-player multiplayer hunts. Reaching that target has required Capcom to examine the game’s assets and underlying processing individually to determine where optimizations could be made without significantly changing the experience.

Sunano described the process as a

“painstaking, and at times seemingly endless”

series of decisions and optimizations. The team has even rebuilt certain assets and shaders from scratch, replacing some visual techniques and internal processes with more efficient solutions for handheld hardware.

Capcom also had to ensure that visual changes would not interfere with gameplay systems. When visual-effect assets were modified, the team checked that they continued to work correctly with existing hitboxes and collision detection.

The Switch 2 work could have benefits beyond the new version. According to Sunano, Capcom intends to use the knowledge gained from optimizing Wilds when making performance improvements to the existing versions ahead of the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion.

Nintendo has confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds will launch on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, with previously released updates included. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is scheduled to follow in 2027.
