Who are the members of BTS? BTS, Bangtan Sonyeondan, Beyond The Scene, Bangtan Boys – the biggest band in the world does go by several names. The South Korean prodigal septet has certainly changed the direction of pop culture in the last couple of years. Wherein America was mostly said to have a monopoly in global popular culture, BTS has been the pallbearer of a massive cultural power shift. Today, if you are the slightest consumer of pop culture content, chances are that you would have to live under a rock to not know who BTS is. Today, the reputation of the band precedes their names and work. That is why, in this article, we have decided to tell you everything you need to know about BTS and the members that you wouldn’t know unless you followed them closely. So who are the members of BTS?
BTS debuted under BigHit Entertainment (now known as HYBE Corporation) on June 13, 2013. Just this year, the band completed eight years in the K-Pop industry, thereby successfully overcoming the fateful 7-year curse when most groups disband. The journey of these seven BTS members wasn’t an easy one. They have had to face massive backlash in the industry for trying to go against the age-old set norms and bring about a revolution. However, in Mahatma Gandhi’s words, ‘BTS, themselves, were the change that they wished to see’. Leader RM often refers to the band as outliers in the system. Frankly, we couldn’t agree more.
At present, BTS is probably South Korea’s biggest cultural asset. Very recently, they were appointed by President Moon Jae In as Special Presidential Envoys to the United Nations General Assembly later this week. The boys were given diplomatic passports for the mission. BTS first delivered a speech in the UNGA as an ambassador for UNICEF’s Love Yourself Campaign back in 2018. Leader RM spoke about the importance of loving oneself above everything and everyone else here.
BTS has constantly punched above their weight to reach the heights that they stand on today. Below, we have compiled simple details about each of the seven members in order of the official fanchant. All the members have been ordered on the basis of their age except the leader. We have discussed Namjoon first. Read on to find out more.
1. Kim Namjoon (RM)
The leader of BTS goes by the name of RM or Real Me. Initially, when the band debuted back in 2017, RM was short for Rap Monster. However, back in 2017, Namjoon announced that RM stands for Real Me as he is trying to accept himself with all his flaws and shortcomings and love himself regardless of them. RM was born in Ilsan, South Korea, on September 12, 1994. His position in the band is that of the leader and main rapper.
RM’s talents and contributions to the group cannot be summarised in 300 words. Without him, there would be no BTS. All the other members have acknowledged this fact on multiple occasions. RM is the glue that helps everyone stick together. In fact, Jung Kook has also acknowledged that he joined BigHit Entertainment (BTS’ Label) in the first place because of how RM influenced him.
It cannot be denied that Namjoon is a gifted lyricist. His lyricism and production capacities are not limited to BTS’ discography. He has over a hundred and fifty songs credited to him. Most of BTS’ songs are written by him, including some of the members’ solos. In fact, RM is also the talent behind Seokjin’s Abyss, along with Jimin’s Promise and Serendipity. And this is just to name a few.
Just off of the top of my mind, RM’s lyricism is brought out best in his songs Trivia: Love and Persona, among others. If you want to know what I am talking about, just listen to the songs once. Trust me. You won’t be disappointed. Namjoon has two mixtapes (solo albums) to his name – RM and mono. Moreover, he also has several non-album singles, one of which includes his own rendition of Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road – Seoul Town Road.
Namjoon is a massive art buff. He constantly posts about his visits to several museums across the world. He has also donated several million Korean Won to museums for acquiring rare art books. Namjoon has an IQ of 148 and is a walking genius. If you saw him solving questions in the several episodes of Problematic Men where he appeared, you would be left flabbergasted. Namjoon’s mind is a place where every ARMY wants to camp!
2. Kim Seokjin (Jin)
Seokjin is hands down the funniest member of BTS. I mean, his dad jokes have a league of their own and deserve an entire show dedicated to them. Jin, as Seokjin goes professionally, is the oldest member of BTS. He was born on December 4, 1992. Though you will most often find him making jokes about literally everything under the sun, Jin’s wisdom pervades that of all the members of the band. He calls himself ‘Worldwide Handsome’ with the confidence that we only wish we had. He is probably the biggest preacher, and practitioner, of self-love in the group, only seconded by leader RM.
Seokjin has a very unique way of dealing with his shortcomings. First of all, he doesn’t even consider their shortcomings or flaws. Jin solves all his problems more gracefully than anyone else and then writes beautiful songs about them. Be it ‘Epiphany’ or ‘Abyss’ – Kim Seokjin is the epitome of self-love and we, as an entire generation, have so much to learn from him. Just, for example, you can check out the way he talks about RJ, his BT21 doll. It is extremely endearing to watch him express his love so animatedly.
Jin is a huge foodie. However, his love for food is not limited to feeding himself. He is an impeccable cook and loves feeding the other members too. In most RUN BTS Cooking episodes, Jin almost always ends up winning the game and stealing the show. It’s almost funny to watch him move around the kitchen with how loud he is. The comfort level that Jin shares with all the members allows the others to be playful with him. But he also asserts the authority that comes with his age occasionally, which ensures that he is well respected as the oldest member of the band. His role is that of a sub-vocalist and visual in BTS.
Interestingly, Jin was cast on the streets for his stunning visuals. He was actually a student in the film and acting department of the famous Konkuk University in South Korea. Yet, fate had other plans, and he is a part of BTS today. However, someday soon, hopefully, we can expect him to star in a K-Drama or movie. It requires no extra skills to understand that the BTS fandom will collectively lose their minds the day this actually happens.
3. Min Yoongi (SUGA)
Min Yoongi, born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea, is the main rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is known to actively write and produce most of BTS’ records. Before debuting with BTS in 2013, he was active under the name Gloss as an underground rapper. He joined Bighit Entertainment originally as a music producer but then went on to train with j-hope and rm and finally debut as an idol rapper. He has several avatars, one being the savage Agust D, who spits fire through his verses, the other being the adorable feline-like member of BTS, Suga, whom fans have nicknamed ‘Lil Meow Meow’.
Suga is a dedicated musician who happens to be a workaholic. He’s mostly seen experimenting with electronic music and working on tracks during the wee hours since he is actively involved in composing, mixing, and arranging most of BTS’ tracks. As a soloist, he has released two mixtapes, Agust D in 2016, which talks about his past struggles with depression and social anxiety, and D-2 in 2020, in which he discusses his present, 2016 onwards. Suga has several songs to his credit and has collaborated with many renowned artists of the industry. Some of his best collaborations being with Halsey on ‘Suga’s Interlude’, Suran on ‘Wine’, Epik High on ‘Eternal Sunshine’, Heize on ‘We Don’t Talk Together’, and IU on ‘Eight’.
Apart from being an incredible musician, Suga has often displayed several domestic skills which have a tight grip on the fandom. He has proven to be an awesome chef, often seen cooking meals for the members during their reality tv programs such as Bon Voyage and In The Soop. He has also earned the title of being the “father of the group’ due to his great organizing, money handling, and observing skills while also taking care of his fellow group members while maintaining a silent demeanor.
4. Jung Hoseok (j-hope)
Jung Hoseok, born on February 18, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea, is the main rapper and dance leader of the group BTS. Apart from being a phenomenal dancer and rapper, he also excels in songwriting and record production. Jhope was the third member to join BTS. He was only 15 years old when he moved from Gwangju to Seoul in order to train for the idol life. Before debuting with BTS in 2013, he was a part of an underground dance team.
His exceptional dance skills won him several local awards. His dancing skills eventually led him to gain an interest in hip hop, which motivated him to audition for several music labels to get selected as an idol trainee. Apart from wowing fans with his rapping and dancing skills, Jhope has also proved himself to be an amazing vocalist contributing his vocals to several BTS tracks, including in Butter, I Like It, Just One Day, and Rain, to name a few.
As a soloist, he released his debut mixtape, Hope World, on March 1, 2018, along with a music video for the title track, Daydream. He also released another music video for the B-side track, Airplane, on March 6, 2018. In 2019, he released Chicken Noodle Soup, a single featuring American singer/rapper Becky G. On March 1, 2021, marking the three-year anniversary of his mixtape, he released the full version of the poignant outro track Blue Side for free on the BTS SoundCloud page and BangtanTV, the group’s YouTube channel.
Fans have also appreciated his leadership qualities, often displaying the said qualities in interviews. He’s also able to show the right amount of firmness and seriousness during dance practices. No matter how jolly and extroverted he is, he is able to handle serious situations well and certainly takes care of the members as a leader should. Just like Jeon Jungkook is known as the ‘Golden Maknae,’ the older member due to the several qualities he exudes and personality have earned him the name ‘The Golden Hyung’.
5. Park Jimin (Jimin)
Jimin is often referred to as the cutest member of the band. He is the one known to do the most’ aegyo’ among all seven of them. Jimin was born in Busan, South Korea, on October 13, 1995. In fact, he keeps telling Jung Kook that the younger always copies him in whatever it is that he does. It is a joke between the two of them. With Jimin starts BTS’ ‘maknae line,’ which consists of the youngest three members of the group. Jimin’s role in the band is that of a lead vocalist. In fact, his voice is considered very unique because it is about eight octaves higher than the normal human pitch.
Along with being an impeccable singer, Jimin is a phenomenal dancer. Moreover, he also happens to have formal training in contemporary. Jimin’s dance is the focus of BTS’ ‘Black Swan’ MV. You can catch more glimpses of his footwork and dance techniques in the orchestral version of the song that he performed solo in the MOTS ON:E Concert last year. Some of Jimin’s non-album singles are ‘Promise’ and ‘Christmas Flower‘. He does accept the fact that he has a long way to go still as a musician, but there is no denying the greatness in him that is already reflected in his work.
Fans lovingly call Jimin ‘Mochi’ or ‘Chim Chim’. He is also referred to as the sassiest member of the band for the sarcasm that overflows in the comments he makes while keeping a straight face. Jimin has been very vocal about his struggles with his body and singing abilities. He has also spoken with the struggles he had while trying to make it to the final lineup of the band. He is a true inspiration for anyone who is struggling with body issues and thinks they are not good enough. Jimin’s immense hard work has brought him where he is today, and we couldn’t possibly be any prouder!
6. Kim Taehyung (V)
Taehyung is the second youngest member of the band. He was born on December 30, 1995, which makes him a 95-liner with Jimin. There is this saying in the fandom that Taehyung was born in the last hours of 1995 so that Jimin wouldn’t be lonely. Frankly, I would have to agree with that, given the chemistry between the two. They are constantly bickering with each other, yet the love and respect that they share are truly endearing. Their friendship is perfectly reflected in the BTS song from their album Map of the Soul: 7 – ‘Friends’.
Taehyung’s stage name V is for Victory. He was a hidden member until right before the band debuted in 2013. Taehyung’s growth throughout the last eight years of BTS has been jaw-dropping. No matter how much his looks have changed, he continues to be the same young boy that he was back when he debuted. Regardless of his age, it is difficult not to find his habits and behavior endearing. Taehyung is very talented. He is not just a singer but also an impeccable actor. We have seen him in the historical drama ‘Hwarang’. Hence, it comes as no surprise that directors of several popular K-Dramas and movies are ready to pay a hefty sum only to see him acting again.
When it comes to writing lyrics and producing songs, Taehyung has surprised ARMY with masterpieces like Winter Bear, 4 o’Clock, and Snow Flower. These were all non-album singles. Taehyung’s beautiful lyricism comes out perfectly in BTS’ Stigma (Wings), Singularity (Love Yourself Tear), and Inner Child (Map of the Soul: 7). And not to forget the masterpiece – Blue and Grey from their latest studio album, BE. We are soon going to receive announcements for Taehyung’s first mixtape that fans lovingly refer to as ‘KTH1’.
7. Jeon Jungkook (Jung Kook)
Jung Kook is the youngest member of BTS. In K-Pop terms, he is the ‘maknae’ of the band. Jung Kook is lovingly referred to as the ‘Golden Maknae’ because he seems to be good at everything that he tries his hand in. Jung Kook adorns many feathers in his cap. Along with being the ‘maknae,’ he is also the main vocalist, sub rapper, and center/face of the band. Jung Kook is also a part of the dance line with j-hope and Jimin.
He was born on September 1, 1997, in the coastal city of Busan in South Korea. Jung Kook joined BigHit Entertainment as a trainee in April 2011. He was only 15 years old then. The young artist has spoken extensively about how he has spent almost the entirety of his adolescence in front of the camera. In his song ‘My Time’, Jung Kook sings – my life has been a movie. Like we already pointed out, Jung Kook’s main reason for joining BigHit was RM. In fact, he had offers from several big companies in the industry, but he denied them all. It was his strong belief in BTS’ leader that has helped him achieve such great heights.
When it comes to making music, writing lyrics, and producing songs, Jung Kook is again a winner already. However, remaining as humble as ever, he still believes that he has a long way to go. Regardless of his humility, Jung Kook has already produced masterpieces like ‘Magic Shop,’ ‘Your Eyes Tell,’ and ‘Film Out’. However, given the fact that he believes he can do better, we can expect more great music from him soon. We are sure. Though, when asked about his favorite song, his answer will always be ‘Euphoria’ for eternity.
