Twilight Out of Focus:
In the presence of a camera, roommates Mao Tsuchiya and Hisashi Otomo establish three crucial promises: Mao must never talk about or share Hisasji’s homosexuality and his relationship with another man, Hisashi must refrain from developing romantic feelings towards Mao, and both must respect each other’s personal boundaries. They embark on their second year of living together with these ground rules in place.
However, their carefully constructed agreement begins to crumble when the film club, of which Mao is a member, decides to cast Hisashi for the lead role in their upcoming movie.
The predicament lies in the film’s plot, which revolves around a boys’ love story—a romance between a delinquent and the class president. Mao, determined to uphold their first promise, fervently dissuades Hisashi from taking on the role. Much to Mao’s surprise, Hisashi readily agrees.
As Mao imagines Hisashi in the role, he becomes acutely aware of Hisashi’s presence. While Mao acknowledges that Hisashi is just a friend and beyond his reach, he can no longer deny his feelings. The once-platonic relationship between Mao and his roommate begins to blur, and Mao finds himself questioning the nature of his emotions.
As Twilight Out of Focus delves into the complexities of their evolving connection, viewers will witness the challenges and conflicts that arise when boundaries are tested, and feelings refuse to be neatly categorized.
Will Mao and Hisashi’s friendship withstand the turbulence caused by their unspoken desires? Or will their relationship take a new turn with the romantic feelings that have surfaced?
