As FX’s Breeders with Martin Freeman slowly builds up its climactic finale, the stage is set to give us a few laughs and lots of tearjerkers in this dramedy that features a couple that’s managed to stick together through thick and thin. We’ve seen them navigate all sorts of crises, but in the end, they manage to put those differences aside and realize that the best thing for both of them is to stay together.
It all seems like the season’s finale and its previous chapters are prepping us for a happy ending, but all things are for grabs as the small knots in the plotlines come and go and are quickly unfolded.
Breeders Season 4 Episode 6 Recap
Breeders’ last couple of episodes covered a gay panic with Ava coming out of the closet and bringing her girlfriend over to her parent’s house, Paul and Ally coming to terms with the fact that their daughter is a lesbian, that his kind, far from being a complete screwup seems to be rapidly maturing and realizing he’s going to be a father and now has a chance to experiment things a bit precociously.
Still, what’s up with Ally? Bored of life and tired of dealing with the same people in her social circle over and over, with nothing to connect to and nothing to share, she decided to reconnect with the group of women that were part of that prenatal class she had seventeen years ago, according to her, that group was not full of jerks, the same kind of jerks she wants to get rid off currently and is giving her the bad vibes.
So, she goes ahead and talks to some of these women, only to find out that many of them are in even a more dire situation than her; some are divorced, some have to deal with pests of children, and some are bitterly unhappy, and as it turns out, seventeen years changes a bunch of people, and they are no longer have the same vibes, attitudes or even sorts of connections that you’d expect for someone like that.
So Ally comes to terms with that and slowly realizes that the one that’s stuck around with her through thick and thin, through mortgage issues, through family crises, through the nervous breakdowns is none other than the man she chose to have her children with, Paul. And that’s something lovely because it sends the meta-message that family is forever. They might not be perfect, but if you love them, that’s who you must rely on to keep the boat afloat.
Breeders Season 4 Episode 6 Ending Explained
Since the bulk of this episode revolves around Ally, with previous ones covering Ava’s sexuality, the son’s teenage fatherhood and his acceptance, and the family’s working of having a kid that’s going to have a child in the middle of high school and a girl that’s coming out of the closet, things shifted towards the matriarch of the bunch, who’s bored with her current social circle and wants to delve a little bit more into connecting with people with similar interests.
To do so, she tries to travel back in time to the days when she had a prenatal class and the pregnant women she was sharing time with were not mean, but as it turns out, seventeen years is a long time, and time changes, people change, and she finds out that her once friends are different people, that sends alarms ringing into her head as she realizes that she’s getting old and that her friend, her one true friend, despite the ups and downs, is Paul.

Breeders Season 4 Episode 6 Review
This episode reminds us that as you grow up, your days of thunder are just that. Proof of that is Ally’s insistence in trying to get back in touch with her former friends from prenatal class, but it’s been a long time, and people’s priorities come and go, and so do friendships. But family is forever, and that’s a lesson that Ally learned.
I think that’s the main takeaway of this show as it slowly builds up to its climactic finale. Ava’s lesbian coming out finally ends up as planned, and that’s just more of what we expect because, all in all, I feel that Breeders’ final season is just setting us all up for a happy ending.
