In the Masterclass confession chapter, the school trip setup emphasizes their relationship and their understanding (or misunderstanding) of each other. The student has accumulated several friendships along the way after Yamada entered his life, even though he did not have the best school life.
As a man, Ichikawa has grown as a person and has been doing the best he can be to become the best he can be, not just as a man responsible for Yamada. Before the Nanpai incident and Ichikawa’s injury, Yamada had enjoyed her crush on him, but eventually, she became imposing on him and tried to refocus herself.
When Yamada felt and correctly assumed that she would have emotional baggage in enjoying the school trip together, she sacrificed something as important to her as auditioning for her favorite fictional work; Yamada felt that her heart was filled with danger. Nevertheless, Ichikawa had other ideas.
When Ichikawa learned that Yamada would not be auditioning, he connected the pieces and realized Yamada was hyper-aware of him to the point where she refused to pursue her happiness for him. His heart was filled with danger as he felt how important he was to her, but was also frustrated that she sacrificed her chance to fulfill her dream; he sensed the danger in his heart as well.
The sequence of events in which they go to great lengths to let their affections be known isn’t the first, since it was established a lot in the previous arc it is the culmination of their efforts and the stakes have been raised.
My favorite part of this chapter was Ichikawa telling Yamada to not underestimate him as he has grown tremendously in his person, and how much it’s due to her. This boundary and expectation establish a suitable boundary and expectation for the two of them. Sukinako, Anjou, Aishiteru Game, and BokuYaba with a quadruple combination, wow.
