Nigerian singer Tems, who had previously won a Grammy, received two additional awards on Wednesday. The well-known actress, who had been nominated for an Oscar, was honored with the Trailblazer Award at the ELLE Style Award in London, United Kingdom, on September 6, 2023.
Tems received an award at the glamourous BMI Awards event held at Miami’s LIV nightclub on September 6. She was named the R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year, marking her fourth BMI Award win. Her exceptional talent was acknowledged because she wrote hit songs like “Free Mind,” Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from the “Black Panther” soundtrack, and her notable collaboration with Future on “WAIT FOR U.”
Tems attended the event to accept her award, which was given to her by two distinguished people, Naomi Ackie, an actress who had won a BAFTA, and Julie Adenuga, the presenter on BBC Radio 1. In her acceptance speech for the award, the singer known for the song “Essence” talked about how her upbringing influenced her success in her career in Lagos, Nigeria, and her strong faith.

Doja Cat got an award for being the best songwriter of the year because she wrote popular songs like “Get Into It (Yuh).” “Woman”, and “Vegas”. Sony Music Publishing was recognized as the best publisher of the year.
Ice Spice received the Impact Award this year for her amazing talent in making hit songs and her creative influence on the Future of music. Chris Brown was named the Songwriter of the Year for his songs “Baddest,” “Come Through,” and “Under the Influence.”

This event celebrated the great work of songwriters, music producers, and music publishers. It focused on the 36th most popular R&B and hip hop songs from the past year out of BMI’s huge collection of more than 20.6 million songs in the United States.
Who is Tems?
Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She gained widespread recognition when she collaborated with Wizkid on the song “Essence” in 2020.
This track reached the 9th position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, especially after a remix featuring Justin Bieber was released. Her contribution to this song earned her a Grammy Award nomination. In that same year, she also lent her vocals to Drake’s song “Fountains.”
In 2020, Tems released her initial set of songs titled “For Broken Ears.” She created another collection named “If Orange Was a Place” in 2021, shortly after signing a music contract with RCA Records.
In 2022, Future incorporated Tems’ vocals from her track “Higher” into his own song called “Wait for U.” Due to this collaboration, Tems was acknowledged as a featured artist alongside Drake on the song. “Wait for U” made an impressive debut at the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This achievement marked Tems as the first African artist to begin at the spot and the second Nigerian artist to achieve this feat. Additionally, her contribution to the song earned her a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Tems created a Bob Marley version of the song “No Woman, No Cry” in 2022, which was included in the soundtrack of the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” At the same time, her song “Free Mind” made its place in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Throughout her career, Tems has achieved numerous awards and recognitions, including a Grammy Award, two NAACP Image Awards, three BET Awards, and three Soul Train Music Awards. Additionally, her collaboration on the song “Life Me Up” with Rihanna led to her being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
