Marissa Jo Cerar’s new series titled Black Cake has shocked fans with its twisted story. Inspired by Charmaine Wilkerson’s best-selling novel, the show’s plot runs dark and sweet. The show explores the past of a woman who traveled countries, changed names, and faced unimaginable horrors.
The show introduces us to a woman called Eleanor Bennett, who, after finding out about her cancer diagnosis, decides to put an end to her life by walking straight into the Caribbean Sea. Her death takes us to her family, which includes her two kids, Byron and Benny, who eventually get called to their mother’s attorney’s office.
While the kids and the audience think that this meeting must be about Eleonor’s will, a certain twist ends up throwing the story in a whole new direction. Charles Mitch, the attorney the kids meet up with, gives them a flash drive instead of paperwork, and we wonder what the device holds.
We will not tell you the complete truth, but we’ll tell you this. The seven recordings put in the flash drive hold Eleanor’s last words for her kids, where she tells them all about her past and her scarring journey to the land of America.
The voice notes will set into motion a story of murder and trauma and reveal Eleanor’s real name, Covey Lin Cook. The show explores the parallel story of Eleanor’s past and the lives of her two kids in the present.
The makers of the show seem to have done a great job weaving Covey’s past, which is intriguing and intense. The plot exploring the present lives of the kids does seem to get a bit stretched, but in the long run, that does not affect the quality of the show much.
The series Black Cake stars actress Mia Isaac in the role of young Covey, Chipo Chung in the role of Eleanor Bennett, Ashley Thomas as Byron, Adrienne Warren as Benny, and Glynn Turman as attorney Charles Mitch, alongside many other talented actors who make the list.
The show aired its first episode on November 1st, 2023, and is about to drop its sixth one, so here is all you need to know about it.
Plot
The show opened with a seventeen-year-old Covey running towards the Caribbean in her bridal gown, dragging the sand behind her. Years later, a woman named Eleanor walks into the Caribbean Sea to put an end to her life. And that was all we thought we would know about this mysterious woman.
Over the episodes, Eleonor’s kids took their time listening to their mother’s recordings on the flash drive, also taking time to process her death. The fact that they did not know how young Covey managed to escape the Jamaican shores, enter the American land, and become Eleanor, a mother to two kids, was a shock to Byron and Benny.
The fifth episode of the show continued with the storyline, and we saw the two continue to struggle with their lives and the past of the mother. But the upcoming sixth episode has another twist creeping up on them.
As the Bennett siblings move on to listen to the seventh and the final recording of their mother’s voice, one mysterious identity shows up on their door. They not only know about the recordings but also want to listen in on the final one. Tune in to the episode to find out who this strange visitor is.
