Hailing from Texas, Milton Powell, or as fans may better know him, Big Pokey was a forty-eight-year-old rapper and one of the founding members of the Houston-based hip-hop collective or union called the Screwed-Up Click, which includes many famous rappers as well, like DJ Screw, Big Hawk, Big Mello, Big Moe, Fat Pat, Lil’ Flip, and so many more.
Born on November 29th, 1974, rapper Big Pokey started his rap career by officially becoming a part of the rap group Screwed-Up Click in the 1990s. This is also where he met with DJ Screw, who got him to rap on a lot of his mixtapes. Though he featured a lot on mixtapes of his crew members, he only released his debut full-length album in 1999, and he called it ‘Hardest Pit in the Litter.’
He released another album, ‘D-Game 2000’ and another in 2002 called ‘Da Sky’s Da Limit.’ One of his songs titled ‘Who That Talking Down’ even got featured in HBO’s production called ‘Entourage.’ His 2005 collaboration with another rapper slash DJ, Paul Wall, titled ‘Sittin’ Sidewayz’ managed to chart at number ninety-three on the American Billboard Hot 100.
The rapper was well-loved by fans and had quite an influence over the rap industry and the Houston rap community. He has, in a way, through his music, turned the rap music industry into a new direction. Throughout his career, he remained associated with the chopped-and-screw music style. He has also affiliated himself with Chevis Entertainment.
The rapper released his most recent rap album titled ‘Sensei’ in 2021, after which he released a whole lot of collaborations with many big names till 2022, and then he moved on to tour around the country, holding concerts and performing at venues for his fans. And it was during one of these events at Beaumont that the rapper fainted while performing and was later taken to the hospital.
It was revealed that even before the emergency CPR could be performed on the rapper, he had passed. Though the cause of his death has not been made public, friends and family, have requested a moment of privacy and peace to mourn for him privately. Not much is known about the rapper’s personal life and relationships, and it feels best to leave things as they are.
Big Pokey’s Net Worth
The rapper, before his passing, contributed heavily to the rap community and changed its entire trajectory. His career managed to get him to a worth of a whopping $12 million, which can be all associated with the music that he put out over the years, the concerts held over the years, and the royalties he must have earned over the years.
Though many may call me ‘underground’ or ‘lowkey,’ in recent years, Big Pokey released quite a few collaborations with big names like Megan Thee Stallion for her song titled’ Southside Royalty Freestyle’ and J Dawg to release together an EP, both in 2023. The rapper was not all that mainstream, but the ones who are true to the community respect him for his work and his nature.
The rapper earned most of his wealth from his album sales, live performances, and brand endorsements, which reached out to him. He had a humble start, but using his natural talent in music-making, the rapper rose to the top earning the respect and love of thousands. Apart from his music which included his solo albums and collaborations, the rapper was known to have founded his own record label called Wreckshop Records.
Big Pokey did not confine himself to just producing music or just being in the music industry but also expanded his business venture into the fashion department and created his own fashion line, Mob Style. The death of the rapper had many celebrities take to their social media to express their sadness, and many continuously commented on how much of a kind soul the rapper had.
He is known to have set up a foundation of his own called the Screwed-Up Click Foundation which functions as a non-profit foundation working to provide young teenagers in Houston with proper educational opportunities and also help them get economical help to lead a better life.
