What happens when the lives of upper-class women begin to unravel after a single mother moves into the neighborhood? Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and Andrea Arnold, the series focuses on Madeline and Celeste, two mothers from an affluent neighborhood who undertake Jean, a new-single mother in their neighborhood, under their wings and how their lives unravel after her arrival.
The black-comedy series was loved by the viewers with the release of its first episode. Big Little Lies was first brought to the viewers to stream via HBO on February 19, 2017. The mystery series had two seasons with 14 episodes, and each episode had a run time of 45- 58 minutes.
The recurring cast of the series consists of Darby Camp playing the role of Chloe Adaline, Cameron playing the role of Josh, Chloe Coleman playing the role of Skye Carlson, Ivy George plays Amabella Klien, Larry Sullivan playing the role of Oren Berg, and Robin Weigert playing the role of Dr. Amanda. The series gained immense popularity as viewers felt it was bitingly funny and addictive.

Big Little Lies- Premise
The series begins in an elementary school located in Monterey, where a planned murder takes place at the school’s fundraiser. The identity of both murderer and victim is kept concealed from the viewers. The series flashes back to the first day of elementary school, with the introduction of the five-graders and their families. Madeline is an alpha woman with a lot of wealth struggling to cope with her ex-husband’s new marriage to Bonnie, a yoga instructor.
At the same time, Madeline is making attempts to repair her relationship with Abigail, his older daughter. Celeste is Madeline’s friend and a lawyer with twin sons. The viewers get to witness Celeste and Madeline befriending Jane, a single mother who is new to the neighborhood. Amabella is the daughter of Renata, and she accuses Ziggy of attempting to choke her at school.
Ziggy denies the accusations made by Amabella, while Celeste leads a happy life with Perry, her husband. Perry starts to lash out at Celeste after he discovers about missing a school orientation after Celeste misses to mention it. Meanwhile, Jane continues to look for work with no success. Madeline and Renata get into a confrontation after she discovers that Ziggy was not invited to Amabella’s party. Meanwhile, Madeline’s new husband begins to question her devotion to him after Madeline continues to go about Bonnie and her ex-husband.
Perry turns out to be abusive towards Celeste, as he chokes her after he starts to believe she left him out of a family gathering on purpose. Amabella’s party turns out to be a success, and Madeline takes the kids to Disney on ice. While Perry admits he is afraid of losing Celeste thus, he lashes out at her.
The first season ends with Celeste making the decision to leave Perry the day after the trivia night ends. Meanwhile, Ziggy confesses to Jane that Max, Celeste’s son was responsible for choking Amabella. Jane, with a heavy heart, reveals to Jane that he son is a bully towards Amabella, and Celeste realizes her son is following in Perry’s footsteps.
Perry confronts Celeste on the trivia night after seeing a text message from Celeste’s new landlady. He is interrupted by Renata, and during the party, Celeste reveals to Renata that her son is the real bully. Madeline, in a drunken state, runs out during Ed’s performance from the guilt she felt from her cheating. Jane follows Madeline, and once they stop atop the stairways, she reveals her affair to Jane.
The second season starts with the women trying to move on in their lives, except Bonnie, who plans to turn herself in for her crimes. The five women reunite on the first day of their children’s second grade. The second season ends with Celeste questioning Mary in court about the death of Perry’s brother. Celeste also shows a video of Perry physically assaulting her to the court, recorded by her son.
Mary leaves Monterey after Celeste wins full custody of her children. Renata leaves Gordon after his possessions are taken by the bank. The four women accompany Bonnie to the police station after she texts them about going to the police station to confess to her crimes.

1. California
California is a state located along the line of the Pacific coast in the U.S. and used by the crew of Big Little Lies as the prime location for the filming of the series. Broad Beach Road in Malibu, California, was used by the crew to film the Beachfront Cape Cod. 603 Crater Camp Drive in Calabasas was used by the crew to film Bonnie’s house and the scenes inside it.
30760 Broad Beach Road in California was used by the crew to film Madeline’s house. The scenes with Madeline and her new husband are also filmed at this location. 161 North Chester Avenue in California was used by the crew to film Jane’s house, and 40 Yankee Point in California was used by the crew to film Celeste’s house.
