Big Brother Season 25 was released on 02 August 2023, with sixteen housemates competing for £100,000 ($1,21,239). The show airs on CBS in the US and Global in Canada. Numerous controversies took place over eighteen years in Big Brother’s house.
Each season arrives with a bunch of strangers from various backgrounds. Thus, sexual or racial comments are inevitable, though the network does not tolerate discriminatory statements.
The housemates are supervised through several cameras by the Big Brother staff and audience. Thus, even a single statement might create a controversy. Further, the audience becomes the jury and votes for the contestants. Finally, the contestants who cannot win the audience’s hearts get evicted. However, wrong behavior or statements might get them evicted at any time.
Big Brother: Recent Controversies
Talking about the latest season’s controversies, Jared addressed the houseguest, America Lopez, using an R-word in August 2023. He got eliminated in the first week of October. He apologized for his behavior after eviction, which looked insincere to his fans.
Luke Valentine created another controversy in the twenty-fifth season by using an N-word during a discussion with his fellow housemates. Big Brother fans demanded Luke’s eviction, and he got evicted the following day for using racial slurs, as stated by the CBS network.
Ian Terry was mocked in the twenty-second season for being on the autism spectrum by his housemates. Briones expressed fear after seeing Ian’s constant movement, and Garrett compared it to a horror movie. Franzel laughed at the latter’s remarks and lost some sponsorships. However, Briones apologized to Ian via Twitter after the season ended.
Jack Matthews made racist and aggressive comments in the twenty-first season. He addressed Kemi Fakunle as a maggot and disgusting. Later, he called the Asian American Isabella Wang as rice pudding. However, Jack apologized to Fakunle and denied addressing Isabella as ‘rice pudding’ to point out her race after getting evicted and grilled by Chen.
JC Mounduix stormed the twentieth season by creating several controversies. He used ice cream scooper on Kaitlyn Herman’s, a houseguest, private parts and asked Kaycee Clark to open up her private parts to make him feel better. Thus, JC Mounduix was accused of sexual harassment twice.
Moreover, Mounduix used an N-word, doubted Rachel Swindler’s gender, touched Tyler Crispin’s forehead, and kissed his armpit when Tyler was asleep.
Big Brother: Older Controversies
The Big Brother Season 5 controversy related to racist comments about the Bollywood star, Shilpa Shetty, took the media to the storm. Her housemates used harsh words for her. Jackiey Budden used to call her ‘Princess’ because she could not pronounce ‘Shilpa.’ She also concentrated on the word ‘The Indian’ for Shilpa.
In short, Shilpa became the victim of racism and had several clashes over it. Finally, the production team and the voters eliminated the housemates who made racist comments, and Shilpa won the fifth season with 63% of the public vote.
Justin Sebik was evicted from the second season for holding a knife against another housemate’s, Krista Stegall, neck while kissing her. He was already warned twice for threatening the housemates through his words.
Justin was eliminated from the house after meeting the psychologist, though Justin later said that the knife incident was a joke that lasted only for a few seconds.
In the nineteenth season, Paul Abrahamian targeted his black housemate, Dominique Cooper, for eviction after applying black makeup, which was addressed as a joke rather than a racist comment by his mother.
Jason Dent made a disturbing comment about molesting his housemate’s wife and the women at the nursing home in the nineteenth season. His wife, Deborah, addressed his comments as the worst she had ever heard.
It was awkward to see George Galloway, the founder and former MP of the Workers Party of Britain, in the fourth season in 2006. He pretended to be a cat and licked milk from the actress Rula Lenska’s cupped hands. Even after six years, the politician explained that celebrities and BBC presenters perform similar stunts for Children In Need.
David Bowie died when his ex-wife, Angie, participated in Big Brother Season 7. Meanwhile, an American producer, David Gest, was sick in bed. Angie informed Tiffany Pollard that David had died without mentioning the surname. Thus, Tiffany announced in the Big Brother House that David Gest had died.
