Big Boggart Gets Tired of Prawns and Goes on a Culinary Adventure in the New Elden Ring Manga

Yen Press's first volume takes a different approach from The Road to the Erdtree, mixing character-focused short stories, absurd food adventures, and a surprisingly moving look at wildlife in the Lands Between.

Elden Ring is known for its bleak world, tragic characters, and unforgiving journey through the Lands Between. However, two manga adaptations have explored a much lighter side of FromSoftware’s fantasy universe. The latest, Elden Ring: Distant Tales Between, shifts the spotlight away from the Tarnished and gives some of the game’s most memorable NPCs their own comedic adventures.

Published in English by Yen Press, the first volume collects stories featuring Roderika, Brother Corhyn, Rya, and Blackguard Big Boggart. Unlike Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree, which follows a specific Tarnished named Aseo, this manga works as a collection of standalone stories centered on characters players encounter during their journeys.

The result is a different kind of comedy manga that draws humor from familiar personalities and situations while retaining connections to the original game’s lore. The appeal of these adaptations lies in finding new ways to explore a world that is usually associated with danger and tragedy.

RODERIKA’S STORY SHOWS THE MANGA’S MORE CHARACTER-DRIVEN SIDE

One of the volume’s strongest elements is its opening story, which follows Roderika after she arrives at Roundtable Hold. Rather than focusing on her journey with the Tarnished, the chapter explores how she adjusts to her new surroundings and interacts with the other inhabitants.

The humor comes from the reactions of the familiar NPCs around her, but the story also gives Roderika room to grow. Her uncertainty and search for purpose remain important, making the chapter feel connected to the character players encounter in the game.

According to Yen Press’s official volume listing, the collection features five chapters, including stories centered on Roderika, Big Boggart, wildlife, Brother Corhyn, and Rya. Each offers a different perspective on the Lands Between without requiring the manga to follow one continuous protagonist.

BIG BOGGART’S FOOD ADVENTURE AND A WORDLESS ANIMAL STORY STAND OUT

Blackguard Big Boggart gets the volume’s most overtly comedic premise. Tired of eating prawns, he sets out to explore other foods across the Lands Between, creating opportunities for encounters with characters from the game. The culinary journey turns an NPC known for his straightforward personality into the lead of an absurd food adventure.

The chapter also fits surprisingly well with the strange creatures and unsettling ingredients found throughout the world of Elden Ring. Its humor comes from treating a ridiculous culinary quest with the same seriousness that the game often gives its dangerous journeys.

A more unexpected highlight is The World of Animals: The Springhare’s Excursion. Told without dialogue, the chapter follows a young rabbit sterring the Lands Between. Its story mixes moments of warmth with the kind of danger players would expect from a world shaped by monsters and decay.

That contrast makes the chapter particularly effective. It offers a brief change of perspective, reminding readers that the Lands Between contains more than demigods, Tarnished warriors, and elaborate boss encounters.

HOW IT COMPARES TO THE ROAD TO THE ERDTREE

The main difference between Distant Tales Between and Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree is their approach to comedy. The latter follows Aseo through a more continuous parody of the game’s events, while Haruichi’s newer collection gives individual NPCs space to headline their own stories.

Not every chapter is equally strong, but the anthology format makes it easy for readers to find something to enjoy, especially if they have a particular attachment to one of the featured characters. The manga’s humor also works best when it builds on personalities and lore that players already recognize.

The first volume of Elden Ring: Distant Tales Between was released in English by Yen Press on August 25, 2026. The publisher has not announced a release date for the second collected volume. For players who want to revisit the Lands Between without another punishing boss fight, this manga offers a lighter way to spend more time with its memorable inhabitants.
