Bethesda Game Studios has issued a warning to Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim players ahead of upcoming game updates. The developer is encouraging players to check their existing saves and manually save their load orders, a precaution aimed particularly at those who rely heavily on mods and Bethesda’s Creations system.

The warning matters because even seemingly minor updates can cause compatibility problems for heavily modded Bethesda games. Players with large mod lists could find that some of their favorite additions stop working until their creators release compatible versions.

Bethesda Wants Players to Save Their Load Orders

Bethesda said on X that players should log into their game saves if they have not done so recently and manually preserve their current load order. “Once your load order is saved, you’ll be able to re-download your entire Creations list at once when the update is live,” the studio explained. Bethesda Game Studios shared the warning ahead of the upcoming updates.

Fallout 4 is scheduled to receive an update on August 18, with Bethesda describing the patch as bringing general improvements to Creations. The studio has not provided a specific date for the corresponding Skyrim update, saying only that it is coming soon.

While the updates themselves may be routine, the timing is likely to concern PC players who use extensive mod setups. Game updates can alter files or systems that mods depend on, potentially causing crashes, visual problems, or other compatibility issues until individual mods are updated.

Mod developers will need to assess their creations once the updates go live, meaning some popular modifications could temporarily stop functioning. Older or abandoned mods may never receive fixes, leaving players with difficult decisions about their existing setups.

Bethesda has issued similar warnings around updates in the past, making this less of a surprise for longtime players. Still, anyone running a heavily customized Fallout 4 or Skyrim installation should consider backing up important saves and load-order information before the updates arrive.
