Discovery Channel’s gold prospecting shows are always fun to watch, these long-format, unscripted reality adventure shows show us how men and women risk everything they have in bad weather conditions to find gold. That’s the gist of Bering Sea Gold Season 17, a season that so far has had its ups and downs for these three crews.
As the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea straight and its nasty weather continue to become an issue for three crews all marred with different problems: Equipment malfunctions, short-staffing, firings and quitting, as well as problematic ounce yields, the show continues to give out surprise after another on each episode.

This episode sees Emily firing her divers from her crew during the ice mining season, she has no divers, and after the last diver left her, she’s wondering what to do next. Now, I can only wonder if Vern really has a lot of bad luck or if it’s just editing to make it look as though he’s a bit of a dark-spirited evil snake.
Still on Vern, while on an operation, his alternator goes FUBAR, it burned out, this is the third one that goes bust, meaning it is the second from the last season. Vern needs a mechanic to take a look at the electrical wiring of his rig so he stops spending time and money.
This episode failed to show us how much money did Chris’s fifteen-hour dive took, we got a partial number, around ninety ounces of gold, but then, as the show progressed, the number shifted to 23 ounces. Is this a miscalculation? Or are they fixing the numbers so Chris doesn’t pay that much in taxes?
Then, there’s the storm, a big storm with bad weather reports hits the crews, and they must do whatever they can in record time to get as much gold out before the waves start hitting them. Luckily, they manage to navigate back.
