Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a passionate address to Congress, reaffirming his commitment to overhauling the country’s economy despite recent setbacks.
Milei, known for his aggressive approach to economic reform, urged lawmakers to pass a new package of bills after a previous version was rejected the previous month.
In his speech, Milei adopted a combative tone, challenging Congress to join him in his efforts while warning that he would implement changes with or without their support.
He emphasized his determination to pursue divisive economic reforms and austerity measures, which have drawn both praise from markets and protests from the public and lawmakers alike.
Key components of Milei’s proposals include significant cuts to government spending on politicians, including the elimination of benefits such as private jets. He also advocated for reducing perks provided to politicians convicted of corruption, presenting himself as a champion against the political elite and their perceived privileges.
Addressing Argentina’s economic challenges, including inflation rates exceeding 250% and rising poverty levels, Milei stressed the urgency of fundamental economic restructuring. He emphasized the need to break away from the existing economic model, which he views as unsustainable and detrimental to Argentina’s future.
Milei also unveiled plans for a 10-point “social pact” to be agreed upon by May 25, contingent upon the passage of his proposed reforms and fiscal overhaul. This pact aims to address longstanding issues in tax fund distribution between the federal government and provinces, fostering cooperation and stability across regions.
While Milei’s address received cheers from his supporters, he also struck a conciliatory note towards local governors, urging them to move past recent disputes and collaborate on achieving broader economic reform.
Despite facing opposition and challenges, Milei remains steadfast in his mission to transform Argentina’s economic landscape.
