The upcoming Apple TV+ Korean drama series Pachinko is a stunning visual masterpiece based upon a great book that also became a New York Times bestseller. Firstly, the original production, slated for release this weekend will captivate you for its compelling plotline, great acting, and amazing edition. It’s one you can’t miss if you’re staying at home this weekend!
Pachinko is a historical drama series created by Soo Hugh. By weaving together three countries and seven decades, the epic story follows one family’s determination to survive and succeed. Youn Yuh-jung plays a young man named Sunja who grows up in Busan during the initial periods of the Japanese colonization of Korea before moving to Osaka and establishing a life there. The other three main characters are played by Yu-na Jeon, Minha Kim, and Youn Yuh-jung. To tell the story of Sunja and her family, the book travels back and forth from several historical periods.
What Is Pachinko About?
Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko tells the story of four generations of a Korean family who are forced to emigrate from their home country and start anew in Japan. The novel is set against the backdrop of Japanese history, from the early 20th century when Korea was under Japanese rule, to the present day. Pachinko is a beautifully written and moving account of one family’s struggle for survival and success in the face of discrimination and prejudice.
This is the story of the Pak family, who are forced to leave Korea and move to Japan. Also, Pachinko is set in four different time periods from 1910 to 1990. We’re likely to see how the novel follows Sunja, a daughter born into poverty on an impoverished farm near Pusan; her son, Puyi, who becomes emperor of Manchukuo; and Pachinko, their grandson, who runs a successful Pachinko parlor.
While the story is split into three books, the show has four episodes, so, the first episode must likely cover the events accordingly. If the novel is an eye-opening look at the challenges and hardships faced by Koreans living in Japan, and it is sure to leave you with a greater understanding and appreciation for their culture and way of life, then the adaptation to the screen must be as good and compelling!
Cast
Sunja is played by three different actresses as time goes by. Youn Yuh-jung plays her adult version, while Kim Min-ha plays Sunja during her teen years and Jeon Yu-na plays Sunja during her childhood. Then, we have Lee Min-ho, who plays Koh Hansu, a Korean man residing in Osaka, Japan. Also, Jin Ha plays Solomon Bae. Anna Sawai plays Naomi. Soji Arai plays Baek Mozasu. Kaho Minami plays Etsuo. Steve Sanghyun Noh plays Baek Isak. Jung Eun-chae plays Kyunghee. Jeong In-ji pays Yangjin. Mari Yamamoto plays Hana. Ian H.W. Jim plays pastor Rhee. Jimmy Simpson plays Tom Andrews.
