AnimeJapan 2026, one of the world’s largest anime conventions, concluded this weekend with record-breaking attendance and a major announcement regarding its future location. Held at Tokyo Big Sight on March 28 and 29, the event drew approximately 156,000 visitors, the highest turnout in its history.

Now in its 13th year, AnimeJapan continues to serve as a central platform for anime culture, bringing together fans, creators, and industry professionals from Japan and around the world under its theme, “All of anime is here.”

This year’s event featured more than 130 exhibitor booths, making it the largest edition to date. In addition, 50 stage events were held across four main stages, RED, GREEN, BLUE, and WHITE, offering a wide range of programming, including announcements, panel discussions, and live performances.

Major anime studios and companies used the event to showcase upcoming projects, while independent creators and smaller publishers gained exposure through curated exhibits and special features.

Interactive Experiences and Fan Engagement

AnimeJapan 2026 placed a strong emphasis on interactive and immersive experiences. Popular attractions such as Cosplayers World and the Family Anime Festa were expanded to their largest scale, appealing to both dedicated fans and families.

Other highlights included the Production Works Gallery, which offered insight into the anime production process, as well as fan-participation initiatives such as the “Manga We Want to See Animated” and “Indie Games We Want to See Animated” rankings.

Attendees also enjoyed a variety of live talk shows, performances, and hands-on activities, creating a dynamic and engaging environment throughout the venue.

Record Attendance Reflects Global Growth

The record attendance of approximately 156,000 visitors reflects the continued global expansion of anime as both an entertainment medium and cultural export. Fans from Japan and overseas gathered at Tokyo Big Sight, reinforcing AnimeJapan’s status as a premier international event.

Organizers noted that the event successfully embodied its theme by offering a comprehensive showcase of anime in all its forms.

AnimeJapan to Relocate to Osaka

In a significant announcement, the organizers confirmed that AnimeJapan 2027 and AnimeJapan 2028 will be held in Osaka, marking the first time the event will move away from Tokyo since its inception.

AnimeJapan 2027 is scheduled to take place on March 27 and 28 at Intex Osaka. The decision to relocate is intended to expand the event’s reach and engage new audiences, particularly in western Japan.

Organizers also highlighted Osaka’s growing international profile, especially following the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, as a key factor in the decision.

Members of Sakurazaka46, who served as event ambassadors, praised the high quality of the exhibits and the experience. They noted that each booth effectively conveyed the appeal of its respective works and described the event as highly enjoyable.

In an official statement, the organizers expressed their gratitude to exhibitors and attendees, emphasizing that the event provided opportunities for discovery, interaction, and a deeper appreciation of anime.

Looking ahead, they stated that future editions in Osaka will aim to deliver an even more advanced and expansive experience while continuing to promote anime on a global scale.

With record attendance, expanded programming, and a major venue shift on the horizon, AnimeJapan 2026 represents a significant milestone for both the event and the anime industry. As the convention prepares to move to Osaka, it aims to build on its success and further strengthen its role as a global showcase for anime culture.
