1991 movie American Ninja 4 filming locations are today’s topic here at Otakukart. Firstly, this movie is a martial arts film. This follows the 1989 movie American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt. Secondly, if you’re not familiar with this movie saga, it tells the story of Joe Armstrong, an American soldier who once had to join the Armed Forces under the instructions of a judge. He did that to prevent a sentence that would make him go to jail in the first movie. Along his adventures, Joe faces many foes. And today we will cover this movie’s production details, cast, and plot.
Since the first American Ninja movie came out in the mid-1980s, the franchise became something of a cult film. Both successful and tacky in its conception. It epitomizes the quintessential American action movie. It has the hero, the villain, and the knot. Our hero, like most of the characters from their time, must deal with his own flaws in character. He faces friends and foes. And for a fourth installment, the bad guys are really evil, as we will see. Without any further ado, let’s take a look at American Ninja 4 here at Otakukart.
American Ninja 4 Filming Locations
The movie American Ninja 4: The Annihilation was shot in the African continent. More specifically in two countries. Firstly, in Johannesburg, South Africa, at a time when the film industry in that country was in very poor shape. Mainly because of international sanctions and a cultural blockade against the South African government. At the time, productions that heavily criticized the apartheid movement were in great support and martial arts movies were in the hype. In consequence, the cinematic genre of martial arts movies in South Africa was the ideal place for a director like Cedric Sundstrom to film American Ninja 4. Moreover, Sundstrom filmed two previous American Ninja movies.
Secondly, the other country where American Ninja 4: The Annihilation’s photography took place was the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho. For a movie like American Ninja, these exotic locations were ideal. On one hand, they kept the costs low, they had little to no union problems, the sceneries were awesome with great lighting. And since it’s an action movie with good choreographies, it’s pretty much downhill from there.
American Ninja 4 Plot
A Delta Force unit tries to flee from a pursuing ninja troop in a distant nation, but most are slain, and the remainder is caught. Colonel Scarf Mulgrew (James Booth), an ex-British police officer and anti-American, leads the covert Ninja Army alongside Sheikh Ali Maksood (Ron Smerczak), a Muslim terrorist who intends to carry a suitcase nuclear to New York. Mulgrew threatens to burn the commandos alive and detonate the nuclear unless a 50 million dollar ransom is paid. Agents Sean Davidson (David Bradley) and Carl Brackston (Dwayne Alexandre) are sent on a clandestine operation to rescue the detainees and destroy the terrorists.
Sean and Carl parachuted into the area and met with their contact Pango (Jody Abrahams). They are challenged by Mulgrew and the corrupt local police led by O’Reilly while collecting information from a local operator called Freddie (Anthony Fridjhon) (Frantz Dobrowsky). Mulgrew kills Freddie, but Sean, Carl, and Pango escape. Pango conceals them from the police with Doctor Sarah (Robin Stille), a Peace Corps medic. Ninjas strike soon after, catching Sean, Carl, and Sarah alive as Pango flees and imprisoning them in an ancient British fort to be tortured by Mulgrew. Mulgrew attacks Sarah, and it is subsequently discovered that Mulgrew murdered her father.
