Freddie McClendon, a contestant on the new season of American Idol, is sharing his deeply personal story during his audition airing Sunday, March 23, 2025. Freddie’s father, Davis McClendon, died under tragic and suspicious circumstances on May 7, 2023, at the age of 46.
Davis was found dead near his wrecked BMW around 1 a.m. Initially believed to be a hit-and-run, the case took a darker turn.

According to 48 Hours, Davis was on a date with his girlfriend, Meredith Haynie, that night. After they parted, Davis called Meredith but suddenly went silent. Meredith and her friend, Megan McGovern, later found his body near his car.

Clues led investigators to Meredith’s estranged husband, Bud Ackerman. Evidence—including a trail of oil from the crime scene to Bud’s parents’ home and damage to Bud’s truck—suggested he intentionally struck Davis. Bud claimed it was an accident, but prosecutors disagreed.
In 2024, Bud Ackerman stood trial. After six days of testimony, the jury deliberated just 30 minutes before finding him guilty of intentionally killing Davis McClendon. Bud was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Freddie’s story of loss and resilience now becomes part of his journey on American Idol, where viewers will see his emotional audition and the tragedy that shaped him.
