Earlier this year, there was a buzz about a movie based on The Sims video game. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment will produce it, with Kate Herron directing and co-writing with Briony Redman. Herron is known for her work on Loki and Doctor Who.
At first, there was no studio attached, but that has changed now. According to a report via GameSpot, Amazon MGM has won a bidding war for the film rights.
The report reveals that Amazon MGM competed with Netflix for the rights, with Netflix offering more money but LuckyChap preferring a theatrical release, similar to the successful model of Robbie’s Barbie.
Video game adaptations have gained prominence recently, thanks to hits like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Last of Us, prompting studios to scramble for the next big game to adapt.
Amazon’s Fallout series has also seen significant viewership, indicating a growing interest in game-based content. Alongside The Sims movie, a Tomb Raider series was recently picked up by Prime Video.
Developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, The Sims series debuted on PC in 2000 and has since spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and more.
While The Sims is known for its open-ended gameplay rather than a deep narrative, Sony took a similar risk with Gran Turismo last year. It poses a challenge for filmmakers, but also an opportunity for new creative directions. Fans are eagerly awaiting more details about the project.
