Japanese culture is the richest of all, and mangas and anime depict it very beautifully. It captures aesthetically pleasing moments very professionally and proves to the world that art is one of the best forms of expression. From folklore to dystopian themes it packs it all. One such manga is Akane Banashi, inspired by the deep-rooted artistic themes of true ancient japan, this provides the viewers with the subtle coldness at the bottom of their stomachs and will always take some part of them when they watch it.
When she was young, Akane was always fascinated by her father and his rakugo, a type of storytelling practiced in Japan in which a single performer, known as a rakugoka, sit still while telling a lengthy, convoluted, and frequently humorous tale starring a variety of characters, each of whom is delineated by the subtle change in position of the head, variations in pitch, and tonality.
However, during her time in middle school, her father along with all of the other candidates was ejected from the Arakawa School during the promoting test to acquire the third and greatest rank of rakugo, shin’uchi. Approximately six years later, Akane, who had been getting classes from her father’s previous teacher in secret, resolves to join the Arakawa School as a shin’uchi in order to exact revenge on her father and demonstrate that rakugo is a respectable career.
What do other people think about this manga?
There are many reviews about this anime all around on different sites. Here are some of the best ones so that new viewers can decide whether or not to read it.
I was blown away by the first chapter, I was surprised there was a rakugo manga this good I hadn’t heard of. And then I realized the truth- this manga is new. I devoured the available chapters in one sitting and now I’ve come to preach the gospel of Akane-banashi.
If you like shonen manga at all, many of the story beats will be familiar. A young person enters a profession aiming to be the best and avenge their father. However, the protagonist, Akane, is utterly charming and what could be cliche tropes are used with such lightness and freshness that you can’t help to be.
Akane-banashi was an utter pleasure to read. While the story set-up is your classical revenge narrative (albeit twisted into contemporary relevance), something we’ve seen before in many, many Shonen narratives, Akane- banashi stands out with its standout characters, modern yet atypical choice of setting, and finally its sheer storytelling finesse.
Finely delivering its narrative without bloating or rushing. It’s a breath of fresh air that this isn’t another manga chasing the whole Demon Slayer/Jujutsu Kaisen trend. The striking and punchy art and character design pull you in for sure, and the paneling is incredibly dynamic despite its relatively mundane subject matter. But style without substance.
I do not know a damn thing about rakugo. Never knew a thing about it before, but after being exposed to this manga, I could certainly say that it is something new and refreshing. It kind of presents itself in a similar storytelling style as March Comes in Like a Lion.
Telling the story of through an element aside from just the characters, but also through the artform of rakuga to express how those characters behave and view the world around them. So far, 20 chapters into the story I have very much enjoyed Akane on her journey to become a renowned performer for the big day.
