Cheating in online games has grown into a much larger business than simply selling aimbots or wallhacks. Activision has now highlighted the scale of that underground economy, claiming the broader video game cheat market generates approximately $8.5 billion annually when cheat subscriptions and related services are combined.
The figure comes from an estimate cited by Activision’s Team RICOCHET and covers multiple parts of the cheating ecosystem rather than Call of Duty alone.
Activision Says Cheating Has Become a Multi-Billion-Dollar Industry
According to Team RICOCHET’s breakdown, a February analysis from threat-intelligence company Intorqa estimated that cheat subscriptions across 15 games generate roughly $3.5 billion per year. The broader $8.5 billion figure also accounts for services such as illicit account sales, boosting and spoofing tools.
Activision says the market operates through a layered network of cheat developers, primary vendors and resellers. Some products are reportedly sold under different names and storefronts despite originating from the same underlying service, making the market harder to disrupt.

The publisher claims Team RICOCHET has disrupted more than 375 reseller operations, issued over 80 cease-and-desist demands and helped shut down 31 primary cheat vendors. Activision says its strategy combines technical detection with legal action against the businesses supporting the ecosystem.
Activision says cheating can become a significant recurring expense for players who purchase subscriptions, spoofing services and replacement accounts. Some cheat subscriptions reportedly cost more than $100 per month, with additional services potentially pushing an individual’s annual spending beyond $1,000.
The publisher argues that disrupting sellers can therefore hurt the cheating business beyond individual account bans. Team RICOCHET summarized its approach by saying,
“The ecosystem keeps changing. So do we.”
The disclosure comes as Activision prepares for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, making its anti-cheat efforts an increasingly important part of the franchise’s upcoming multiplayer ecosystem.
