The story begins with Eliza Scarlet, who we see being left with no money as her father suddenly dies. Before passing away, he also had considerate debts, which have now fallen upon her shoulders. The only way to get rid of those and settle down with a secure financial future is for her to marry. But obviously, she is not amused by the thought of a wedding and having kids.
The writer of the series, Rachel New, talked about how her inspiration for Eliza’s character came from the classic Jane Austen novel called Pride and Prejudice. We see the lead character Elizabeth Bennet who is fearless and clever, and feisty. Rachel pitted all those qualities into Eliza and also gave her a career as a detective and her own ambitions in society.
Now, we see that she is in urgent need of money and, thus, decides to open her father’s detective agency again. Although, it is tough for her to be a detective because she is a woman. In the forest episode itself, we see her landing in trouble with a case that she herself found. With the help of an old colleague William Wellington, we see that she has been holding up well till this point.
William is a detective for the police. Henry Scarlet took care of him as an orphaned child from Glasgow and even mentored him throughout the police academy. This is how he became a successful detective in town and, thus, owes Eliza a lot. Even though the two bicker and argue a lot, it is obvious that from day one, the two have some unsettled romantic chemistry between them.
