Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong are the Chinese online series Guardian stars from 2018. Priest’s 2012 fantasy-dan mei web novel was made into a series and distributed on the streaming service Youku between June 13 and July 25, 2018. The show centers on Zhao Yunlan (Bai) and Shen Wei (Zhu), a professor and a detective who look into paranormal occurrences.
Although the web series portrays their connection as a platonic friendship with a homoerotic undertone in response to Chinese legislation forbidding depictions of same-sex couples on television, the novel portrays their relationship as passionate. The Earth-like planet of Haixing, where Guardian is situated, has two extraterrestrial races: the Dixing, who possess superhuman abilities, and the Yashou, who can transform into plants and animals.
Since the Yashou and Dixing arrived over ten thousand years ago, the three races have lived in harmony, only disrupted by an ancient conflict started by the Dixing after a meteor strike decimated their resources. The hero Kunlun, who led the Haixing and Yashou during the battle, grew close with the Black Robe Envoy, the head of a group of the Dixing that desired peace at that time. The Haixing used four holy implements from the meteor to end the conflict. After the battle, Kunlun disappeared, and the Black Robe Envoy took over as the Guardian of interracial harmony while Kunlun was away.

His ex-girlfriend from high school, Hui-Ru Zhu, has been named a suspect in a homicide inquiry and needs his assistance to clear her identity. Hui-Ru Zhu is charged with murder at the same time that several homicide cases from a decade ago come back into the public eye. The similarity to a string of horrifying murders connected to a suspect using the internet alias “The Snowman” is the cause. It resembles the recent murders connected to serial killers and former police officer Wen Luo.
