Look Both Ways ending is just as beautiful as we thought it would be. Wanuri Kahiu has directed this amazing story with a very creative idea. The movie was released on Netflix recently and is a perfect watch for summer. It focuses on Lili Reinhart in the role of Natalie. She is an animator and wishes to find success in LA. Although, it came down to just one moment of her life when she decides to hook up with her best friend Gabe.
Hereby, the two narratives are split. And not going to lie, the film does mix these two timelines and at one point, it gets super confusing. Well, let us help you out of that confusing chaos and untangle things in an ordeal manner. Just like Natalie and Jake like to believe in the theory of how if we fail to plan, we are planning to fail. The whole story is a bittersweet experience of how a woman can live two lives and always manage everything. Be it the harder route or the easier one.
The film begins at a graduation party. Natalie and Gabe have already hooked up after making out in the library. He wants to pursue his career in a band and go on tours. His group even has found a sponsor for the same. As for Natalie, she has a 5 years plan to go over to LA with Cara and live her best life as an animator and artist. Well, no it has come down to only one event of Natalie’s life that could change it all; whether or not she is pregnant. In order to understand what goes down in the film, let us divide the two narratives and explain them each.
Look Both Ways Ending Explained
Narrative One: Natalie – Not Pregnant
Natalie, after finding out that she is safe and not pregnant, enjoys the graduation party. She and Cara pack their bags and move to LA together. Initially, Natalie finds it really hard to bag a great job as an artist in the city. Ultimately, she attends a party thrown by one of her animation idols named Lucy and applies to be her assistant at the same time. She also meets Jack who helps her through it. The two start getting really close and spend an insane amount of time with each other on dates.
Although, Natalie does not want to be an assistant anymore and shows Lucy her portfolio. Lucy asks her to basically quit her job and go find her own true voice. At the same time, Jake moves away to Niva Scotia to become a producer, and the two break up. She goes back to Austin with Cara to attend a baby shower for their friend.
Natalie gets her inspiration finally and starts working on her comic. Her work is later admitted to SXSW, a dream of a basically a very comic artist. While attending the event, she meets with Gabe and catches up. He is now a married man and the couple is pregnant. Soon, on the night of the event, Jake comes running back to her and they get back together. Lucy too starts appreciating Natalie’s work and asks her out for a project in LA. This is how things end for not pregnant Natalie.
Narrative 2: Natalie – Very Pregnant
After the graduation party, Natalie tells Gabe about her pregnancy. He tells her that he would support her with whatever decision she decides to take. The next day, she tells Cara she has chosen to keep the baby. Natalie and Gabe pack their bags and go back to her parent’s house. Here, they face the wrath and anger of her parents.
Ultimately, everything falls in place as Natalie gives birth to a baby girl named Rosie. Gabe wants to be with her although, she is afraid given the fact that if things end up between them, how badly it would affect Rosie. Thus, Gabe starts dating and gets engaged with a woman named Miranda. Ultimately, to get him off his mind, Natalie starts working on a comic strip named Night Owl. It gets nominated at the SXSW, and she goes down to attend the event. Upon coming back, she finds out that Gabe has broken up with Miranda because he was always a little in love with Natalie. The two decide to get back together and rekindle their romance.
In the end, we see both the Natalies walking into the venue of their graduation party and saying in the mirror that they are okay.
