The Red Tide begins with the character named Harry Gardner. He has a wife, and they are pregnant. The couple also has a daughter named Alma. The trio is seen traveling from New York City to Provincetown in Massachusetts. They are going down for a trip for three months. When Dorris and Alma decide to go on for a walk, they notice a man stalking them. This man is dressed in a trenchcoat. They complain about the same to Chief Burleson. He assures the family that Provincetown is a safe and quiet place to be. As for the stalker, the chief says it might be some opioid addict. Convinced by his response, the Gardeners start spending their time freely in the area.
Later, Harry goes down to a bar, where comes across Belle Noir and Austin Sommers. The two are novelists and write in the erotic genre. Harry is delighted to talk with the two. He himself is in the town trying to get back ahead of his writer’s block. They talk about everything related to art and inspiration. When Harry gets back home, the pale man who has been stalking his wife and daughter attacks him. In order to protect himself, Harry ends up killing the man. The family decides to leave the town and get rid of the horrors.
Although, just when they are about to leave, Austin calls Harry and tells him that he has a cure for the writer’s block he has been going through. Attracted by the offer, Harry decides to stay a little bit longer. Austin gives him a set of black pills which he must take. These pills will make him creative.
