Emilico and Shaun venture around in the night and end up on the rooftop of the shadow house. There they wonder about Kate’s word that Living dolls are actually humans and Shadows are their imitation of them. Emilico shows her desire to go outside and what type of life she could have had outside of the shadow’s house and what they did for work.
While leaving, Emilico meets an unknown individual who is also working for the cause. Later, a sudden rejoicing party is held, and the living dolls are greeted with coffee. Emilico again starts acting as a slave, and Kate wonders if this coffee might be made in the adult wings. John and Shaun wind up at the research facility, where they meet Jeremiah and Jeremy, who explains to them that scorches are made from the soot, which are negative emotions of the shadows, and they desire a face. Jeremy says that it could be a great source of power for the shadow’s house. Oliver enters the scene and says that John is invited to the star-bearers’ meeting.

Kate, her detective agency, is tasked with finding what is the grandfather’s wing and what they are hiding from them.
