All the comic geeks out here must have read one of the most popular works by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman. Well, this well-known comic is all set to debut on Netflix on August 5 as a television adaptation. The fans all over the globe are quite excited as the show drops its first trailer on June 6. Let’s jump to The Sandman Trailer breakdown.
The first season of this show is expected to most likely cover the first volume (Preludes Nocturnes) and some parts of volume 2 (The Dolls’ House). This comic has a total of 10 volumes and is one of the most famous comics of the 90s. A lot of its shots have been taken directly from the comic and can be easily recognized in the trailer.
The Sandman Trailer Breakdown
The trailer starts with the introduction of Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), who appears to be held captive by Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance). Burgess appears to be performing some kind of ritual in the scene. This ritual was supposed to capture Dream’s sister, Death, but instead, Morpheus was caught. Morpheus then introduces himself as the king of Dream and the ruler of the Nightmare realm.
The trailer then moves on to the story of how Morpheus escapes and the use of a dimensional portal. The production team has left no stone unturned in replicating the visual effects of the comic. In the scene, we can see Dream in a cloak and his three power objects, surrounded by cultists. The three objects of power are his helmet, bag of sand, and ruby scattered all around him. Next, we can also see Heady talking to Joanna Constantine and knowing many secrets of the Dream.
Morpheus, The King of Dreams
Next, we see Matthew (Dream’s raven) flying through the woods and towards a magnificent castle, which is the home of the king of dreams, Morpheus. The beautiful green sprawl next to the castle seems to be Fiddler’s green. It’s a sentient part of dreaming that later assumes the identity of Gilbert (Stephen Fry). He walks about the waking world when his dreams are imprisoned. This shifts to a massive gate of stone, metal, and ivory emblazoned with Dream’s helmet. It also had carvings that could be other members of the endless.
According to the audience, this gate feels like a way to separate Dream’s proper realm from what lies beyond it. However, the reality seems to be much bleaker as we see Lucian in the next scene. He is the head of the library of dreams and is here to give his master some important information. Lucian informs him about the decay of the realm in his absence, which also had an effect on the palace. The dream then uses his power objects to rebuild the kingdom. We can also notice interesting things, such as a dream in which he teleports using his sand.
Members of the endless
The trailer also introduces the audience to the siblings and members of the endless. Kirby Howell is baptized as death, walking through the field in her signature ankh necklace. The trailer also reveals Mason Alexander Park as the role of desire. The trailer then reveals John Dee holding a dream stone ruby, and it is clear that this will be playing a very crucial role in the plot.
Last, but not least, we see a nightmare that definitely no longer recognizes its master. Corinthian, played by Boyd Holbrook, can be seen with blood trickling down his cheek. This man has a lot to offer in the upcoming episodes and lives up to his name, Nightmare.
The teaser, however, doesn’t show how big of an impact John Dee will have on both the Sandman’s domain and Earth. It does imply that Dream’s initial capture by Roderick Burgess had major implications that have negatively impacted both realms over the course of a century. One of the most significant repercussions is the Corinthian escape, which will undoubtedly cause havoc in both universes. This Wraps us with The Sandman trailer explained.
