What is The Real Story of The Little Mermaid?
In the original story, The Little Mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her five sisters, grandmother, and her father, Mer-King. She was younger than them. Once a year, a princess is allowed to swim in the sea and get a glimpse of the outside world once they turn fifteen. Over the years, The Little Mermaid was listening to her sisters about the beauty of the world, eagerly waiting for her turn.
When her turn comes, she watches a birthday celebration of the Prince from a safe distance and falls in love with him. A strong thunderstorm hits the Prince’s ship, and he falls into the ocean. The Little Mermaid saves the Prince and delivers him unconsciously to the shore of a temple, where a woman from the temple finds him. To her distress, the Prince never sees her face.
When she returned, she asked her grandmother, “does a Human live forever”. Her grandmother told her, “Human life is shorter than Mermaid’s life”. However, after humans die, they turn into a soul while Mermaids cease to exist.” Her willingness to gain a human form forced her to visit the ocean Witch who lives in the most dangerous part of the ocean. The Witch offered to give her the feet in return for her voice as the Little Mermaid has the most enchanting voice in the world.
What Happens In The End? Does The Princess End With The Prince?
The Ocean Witch warns her, “Once you turn to human, you will never return to the sea. Also, you will only get the human soul if you meet your true love and marries him. If you marry your love, his half soul will run into yours. Or else at the dawn of his marriage, you will die with a broken heart.”
Although the legs make her as if she is walking on knives, the Little Mermaid agrees to have the Witch’s Magic Portion. Agreeing with the arrangement, the princess drank the portion. The portion feels like some sword piercing her body. She passes out on the shore and is found naked by the Prince. Enthralled by her beauty, the Prince invites her to live in his castle. He was very impressed with her dance, and soon, she became the Prince’s favorite companion.
Later, the Prince’s Parents arranged his marriage with a neighboring Princess, which the Prince declined, saying he would only marry the girl who saved his life. The neighboring princess turns out to be the woman who saved his life as she is sent to the temple for her education. Prince declares his love for her, and a royal wedding is announced.
As the royal wedding celebration went on, the Little Mermaid waited for the dawn, thinking about her death. Her sister emerges from the ocean and gives her the dagger that the Witch gave them in exchange for their long hair. If she kills the Prince and lets his blood flow on her feet, she will revert to her former state as a mermaid, putting an end to her ordeal.
However, She can’t bear the thought of killing the sleeping prince and his new wife, so she tosses the dagger and herself overboard. Her body melts into a froth, but she feels the warmth of the sun and realizes she has transformed into an ethereal earthbound soul.
