Russian Doll is back with Season 2! The second season of one of the most loved shows arrived on Netflix on 20th April 2022. Now, who doesn’t love second chances in life? To go back in time and change the course of your problem, people will have no problem then. Although it is not possible in real life, it is possible in a fictional world. In Russian Doll, Nadia gets the second no multiple chances at life. In the first season of Russian Doll, Nadia and Alan are stuck in a time loop.
To get out of it they must handle their internal struggles. An infinite loop jumping through timelines makes it tricky to catch up. And the Russian Doll Season 2 ending, left the fans more confused. So, we’ll be going through it. But, before we dive into it, we’ll look at what happened so far. We know that Alan and Nadia’s stories get intertwined and there are two timelines at the end. But is that going to continue this season as well? We must watch it to know more!
Season 1 and Season 2 Recap
So, the story begins with Nadia Vulvokov, a software engineer at a video game company. After reckless partying Nadia meets with an accident and dies. Although usually it’s one and done, Nadia relives her night at that party repeatedly after every death. Nadia is looking into this matter but fails to connect the dots. But she is not alone in this! Alan Zaveri, a depressed young man is also stuck in another loop. And apparently, both their lives and deaths are connected
When Nadia dies Alan dies as well, and vice versa. While solving the puzzle they are stuck in, Alan and Nadia find a good friend in each other. Since this loop is spiraling downwards, both of them have little time left to figure out things. Finally, on the verge of extinction, Alan and Nadia let go of things they held on to. For Nadia, it was her guilt and for Alan, his ex-girlfriend, who was the reason behind his depression. And that gets them on the other side of the tunnel. That’s Season 1!
However, Russian Doll season 2 is more about time travel. Both Alan and Nadia go back in time. Nadia who blamed herself for her mother’s suicide wants to alter events from the past. But in her desperate attempt to change things, she makes it even worse. Despite her many attempts, fate remains the same. On the other hand, Alan is having the time of his life. When an introvert and lowkey guy lives the life of an extravagant person. It’s either a nightmare or a dream come true, for Alan it’s the latter.
Russian Doll Season 2 Ending Explained
Have you seen what a Russian Doll is? A large set of hollow dolls that goes within each other. Similar to Nadia and Alan’s layers of timelines and lives.
Russian Dolls Season 2 is similar yet different than season 1. Timetravel through a “magical” train is the new twist this season. Nadia travels back to 1982 when her mother steals a bag of gold coins from her grandmother. After losing the bag that she was bringing to the present. Nadia decides to go back to the time of her grandmother and bring the bag of gold coins. But no matter what Nadia did, the conclusion remained the same.
Meanwhile, the same thing happens to Alan in 1962, Germany. Embodying his grandma, Alan too travels back to learn more about her. Living as his grandmother is fun until he has to make tough decisions. Alan is trying to change history to save the people he met in 1962, especially Lenny. But even though he knows he knows the inevitable he fails to change it over and over.
At some point, Nadia witnesses weird broken timelines, where three timelines were happening together. That’s when she sees her other future which is her death. And even Alan’s dead body is shown indicating the timeline where Nadia fails to save him. But it’s not real! Alan is not dead in the actual timeline.
After going back and forth in time, both Nadia and Alan go into a pocket without time. There they get closure and realization about life. And they return to the actual timeline, with a new perspective of life.
What is the Message of the Russian Doll Season 2?
This season is all about family and acceptance. It sheds light on the importance of living in the moment than clinging to the past. And finally, our characters also find that acceptance and peace. Since they were stuck in a loop while trying to change things, it makes them realize that things in the past are not meant to change.
As Alan says “Can’t escape being the product of things we can’t change” which pretty much sums up the new season.
If you love a good time traveling thriller-comedy, or even if you don’t, Russian Doll is a must-watch. Fans demanded another season of the show that’s how popular the first season got. It has everything from thriller & action to comedy & drama and the plot will keep you on the edge!
