Being one of the most talented and highlighted webtoon authors of all time, she has become the talk of the internet in no time. Also, the fact that she has made her name globally known with her hit webtoon “True Beauty” adds up to the spotlight she is living under.
The webtoon was not only a success domestically but also globally on many levels. It’s an adaptation into a drama series by tvN also became a global hit as it portrayed something really unique and relatable for most of the viewers out there. It questioned the not-so-fair beauty standards revolving around society and explained how it affects a victim from the inside.

True Beauty Webtoon Writer ‘Yaongyi’: All About Her Time on MBC’s Radio Star
In a recent episode of MBC’s Radio Star, Webtoon author Yaongyi has shared her idol inspiration, who has recently caught her eyes. She is popularly known for her hit webtoon “True Beauty” and with her recent appearance in the television show, she has gathered the attention of the entire internet.
Talking with the hosts, she shared one of her recent real-life personal experiences that was transformed into a webtoon. Describing the same, she said that once she went to a market dressed in pajamas with her elder sister, and the next time she went with makeup on. The cashier at the supermarket didn’t recognize her in their second encounter and ended up saying to her elder sister, ‘Oh, so you have two younger sisters.’
Talking about her career and passion for developing webtoons, the writer shared that she always tries to keep up with the latest trends so that she can include them in her future webtoons. This helps her in keeping the viewers and readers in check.
Taking a trip down in the past, Yaongyi recalled one of the incidents where she accidentally gave her age away through the story. Explaining the same, she said that Season one of “True Beauty” was set in high school, but in reality, she graduated from it a while ago.
Therefore, it is very normal for her to have many memories of hanging out and having fun with her friends on the rooftop, and that inspired her to mold her characters into the same i.e., talking and eating together on the roof of their high school. But things didn’t go the way she was hoping they to as many people commented that no school allows students to go on rooftops anymore.
It was one of the lessons for her, to make her keep up with all the modern changes and transformations. For the same, she often takes inspiration from idols to keep track of fashion and beauty trends.
Explaining this, she said that webtoons are updated with a new chapter every week, and therefore she tries to have them completely related to the latest fashion trends. When it comes to clothes and makeup, she frequently uses idols as references.
This led to the next question, which was about which idols she has kept an eye on at the moment. To this, Yaongyi named IVE’s Jang Won Young and NMIXX’s Sullyoon. She reasoned that both of them are very pretty and are loved by both genders. Also, they are popular not only domestically but also on the global level.

True Beauty Webtoon: A Bit About It
Also known as “The Secret of Angel”, “True Beauty Webtoon” was first published in Naver Webtoon on April 2, 2018. Written and illustrated by Yaongyi, the webtoon narrates a story about a brutally bullied and discriminated woman who becomes a pro in the art of makeup in her teenage years in order to transform herself into a beautiful lady.
The official English version of “True Beauty Webtoon” gained a total of 6.6 million subscribers and 825.9 million views as of 2022. As of 2019, it was the third most-viewed series on WEBTOON, and the print version of the same was released on October 29, 2020, by Young Com.
Moreover, taking the success of webtoon into consideration, tvN developed this into a drama series with the same name starring Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-woo, and Hwang In-yeop.
