Manga sales in North America are on the rise, paralleling the growth of the anime industry in recent years. The coronavirus pandemic spurred a surge in manga and anime consumption among fans in quarantine, with numbers continuing to climb even after the initial spike. A recent report unveils the top-selling manga series in North America for 2023.
Although North American manga sales are increasing, they still lag behind Japan’s robust market. In 2023, Japan’s top-selling manga was Blue Lock, exceeding ten and a half million copies sold, with Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece following closely behind.
However, the top-selling manga in North America differs significantly from Japan, with Blue Lock absent from the top five rankings.
In North America, Demon Slayer reclaimed its position as the best-selling manga, outpacing even perennial favorite One Piece. The rankings for 2023 were as follows:
1. Demon Slayer – 2,050,000
2. One Piece – 1,900,000
3. Chainsaw Man – 1,235,000
4. Jujutsu Kaisen – 1,080,000
5. My Hero Academia – 900,000
Demon Slayer’s resurgence can be attributed to new readers discovering the series, with its first volume emerging as the top-selling individual volume in North America. Meanwhile, One Piece’s enduring popularity, coupled with its extensive volume count, contributed to its strong sales performance.
