For quite some time, followers of Jujutsu Kaisen have noticed that the creator of the manga, Gege Akutami, is a big fan of Hunter X Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi. This became even more apparent during the Shibuya Incident Arc, where the storytelling style resembled that of Hunter X Hunter.
Recently, a Jujutsu Kaisen fan proposed a theory based on this observation. They suggested that Akutami might decide future character deaths in the series by drawing inspiration from Togashi’s approach.
While this theory might seem a bit strange at first glance, there’s no concrete reason to dismiss the possibility of Akutami taking this storytelling direction.
A Hunter x Hunter Parallel in Jujutsu Kaisen
On X (formerly Twitter), @TBradyRS, a Jujutsu Kaisen fan, floated a theory suggesting that Gege Akutami might take a page from Hunter x Hunter’s playbook and have Ryomen Sukuna follow a similar path as Hisoka Morow in the series. This hypothetical scenario could involve Sukuna targeting Jujutsu Sorcerers like Ui Ui and Shoko Ieiri to gain an upper hand.
The fan drew parallels between Sukuna and two Hunter x Hunter characters – Meruem and Hisoka Morow. They highlighted how Sukuna, like Meruem, respected formidable opponents, yet shared similarities with Hisoka in his belief of being the strongest and prioritizing his own desires.
Furthermore, the fan pointed out a recent similarity between Sukuna and Hisoka: both characters used their energy to sustain themselves when pushed to their limits. However, they noted that Hisoka’s personality underwent a significant change after his resurrection by Chrollo. Previously known for seeking pleasure, Hisoka became more pragmatic following his revival.
After adopting a more pragmatic approach, Hisoka targeted two of Chrollo’s indispensable allies – Shalnark and Kortopi – knowing their significance to the Phantom Troupe leader’s plans. By eliminating them, he aimed to inch closer to his goal of avenging against Chrollo.
Considering Hisoka’s shift in strategy, there’s a likelihood that Sukuna might similarly pursue Ui Ui and Shoko Ieiri. Like Hisoka, Sukuna no longer takes the Jujutsu sorcerers lightly, especially since he’s faced with his own mortality.
Sukuna had previously observed Ui Ui’s crucial role among the Jujutsu Sorcerers, particularly his adept use of Teleportation to whisk Satoru Gojo and Yuta Okkotsu away from the battlefield. Although Sukuna couldn’t ascertain their destination, he speculated that Ui Ui might have been transporting them to Jujutsu Tech’s doctor, Shoko Ieiri.
