Speaking on the heels of the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine revealed the country’s readiness for an anticipated Russian offensive set to commence in late May or summer.
Zelenskiy emphasized the necessity of cohesion between Kyiv and its Western allies, underlining that Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression hinges on sustained support from the West.
“We will prepare for their assault…We, for our part, will prepare our plan and follow it,” Zelenskiy affirmed during a press briefing in Kyiv, highlighting Ukraine’s commitment to strategic readiness in the face of looming threats.
Zelenskiy disclosed the toll of Ukrainian soldiers since February 2022, marking the first official acknowledgment in over a year. He stressed the significance of troop rotations and the imperative to fortify reserve forces to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Acknowledging challenges, Zelenskiy voiced confidence in the U.S. Congress’s approval of substantial military and financial aid, urging a swift decision within a month. He underscored the pivotal role of Western support, citing unfulfilled promises from the European Union regarding ammunition supplies.
As Russia strengthened its position with recent territorial gains, including the capture of Avdiivka, Zelenskiy remained resolute, asserting Kyiv’s clear plan to counter Russian forces. Despite refraining from divulging specifics to safeguard strategic advantage, Zelenskiy assured that Ukraine maintains a decisive strategy.
The recent overhaul in Ukraine’s military leadership aligns with Zelenskiy’s undisclosed military strategy, aimed at enhancing operational efficacy while safeguarding confidential tactics.
Zelenskiy hinted at Kyiv’s diplomatic efforts, proposing a spring summit in Switzerland to articulate Ukraine’s peace vision and engage with allies before presenting the blueprint to Russia.
With diplomatic initiatives underway and military preparations in motion, Ukraine braces for the challenges ahead, determined to defend its sovereignty and pursue avenues for lasting peace.
