Nicki Minaj had hosted New Year’s Eve’s celebration at E11even Miami, and during her own performance, she made her fans upset for a while as she refused to sing the 2012 hit track “Starships” when her fans demanded to hear it. The song “Starships” was highly loved by her Barbz, as it had peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
As the fans had put their demands, Nicki, in the follow-up of her performance, accepted the demand and started singing, but soon she cut off her own performance and called her song Starships a ‘stupid’ song, which left her fans in an abrupt condition.
Nicki Minaj makes her fans unimpressed as she calls her song Starships ‘Stupid.’
On the New Year’s Eve celebration at E11even in Miami on Sunday, Nicki Minaj’s performance left her fans in an abrupt situation as she cut off her ongoing performance when her fans demanded to hear her sing the song ‘Starships’.
Starships is one of her hit tracks from her second studio album, ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’, which was released on February 14, 2012. The song was so highly appreciated by the fans that it hit the peak of being No. 5 in the Billboard Hot 100.
Firstly, when the fans made their request, Nicki, in the flow of her performance, accepted the request and started to sing the song, but sooner she realized it’s “Starships” she’s been singing. Nicki goes on, saying, “Hold on, I don’t perform that song anymore, y’all,” and abruptly cuts off her performance in between.
The audience had gone unimpressed the moment she said, “I don’t like it,” because the Barbz still like it to date, and that’s why the demand came along. Dislike was not the end of her remarks about the song, as she further called it ‘stupid’.
Nicki addressed the audience’s demand of ‘Starships’ by saying, “What do y’all want me to do? Stupid song?” A singer calling her own song, which stayed No. 5 for 31 weeks on the chart of the Hot 100, was disappointing to some, whereas for others it sounded quite okay. Nicki Minaj definitely didn’t have any intention to hurt her Barbz sentiments, as she didn’t stop performing but just denied one song request and further thrilled her fans with her 2010 hit track “Super Bass.”
Every action has a reaction. Though Nicki didn’t mean to raise a debate on her decision, the fans couldn’t control themselves from giving one. Videos on TikTok went viral from the moment, and the fans flooded it with comments, where some were disappointed by what Nicki had said and some didn’t find it such a matter of disappointment.
A fan had made a comment that read, “It makes me sad when artists say they don’t like their most popular song. That song gave you tones of sales, fans, and recognition; at least respect it.” Whereas one fan said, “I don’t blame her; it’s dated and would get annoying to perform all the time.”
What happened at the event was not the first time the hip-hop queen, who has recently released her fifth album, Pinky Friday 2, has criticized her own song. Back in 2020, she told Pollstar Live that she hates Starships and said, “I mean, ew, Starships?” and further she said, “Why did I do that? I really think that every time I hear it” in the interview.
‘Starships’ is not the only song on Nicki’s regret list. During the same interview, she revealed that she regrets recording ‘Your Love’ and ‘Anaconda’. In relation to her dislike of these songs, she said, “I wish I never recorded ‘Anaconda.’ I like the video, but ugh.” About ‘Your Love’ she had said, “My first ever solo song on Billboard was ‘Your Love.’ To this day, I like the video, but I hate the song. I could go on and on.”
Nicki Minaj, the hip-hop queen, is to begin her “Pink Friday 2 World Tour” on March 1, 2024, in Oakland, CA (Oakland Arena).
