Before getting enlisted in the military service, RM wrote a letter to his fans and posted it on Weverse. Fans found it very difficult to translate it into English and therefore requested the band’s translator do so. He is named – Anton Hur. But, surprisingly, he refused to decode. The question is- why?
Anton Hur is a writer and translator of Korean literature. Little did you know, he even got awarded the PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant for translating “Cursed Bunny.” Even though he is a Korean citizen, he was born in Stockholm. One of his other works is the Korean version of “Night Sky with Exit Wounds.”
Concerning the heartfelt letter written by the Rap Monster, aka RM, he penned about his happy memories with the ARMYs. Not only that, but he also talked about his nervousness from spending 18 months in the military. Sadly, fans felt the original version was quite nuanced.
Previously, Anton Hur worked with the BTS for the translation of its memoir, “Beyond The Story: 10-Year Record Of BTS.” But, this time, he took it to social media, being reluctant enough to do so, which led to a debate. What happened to him?
What Happened To Anton Hur? Everything To Know
Before learning why Anton Hur declined to translate RM’s letter, one must note what it was all about. Well, the idol shared that the 18 months of his military period can be long or short- he isn’t aware of that. However, he trusts that it will be a time when they will earn “foreign but new inspiration and learning.”
A part of RM’s letter said, “Although it may be scary and daunting, is there anything more comforting than the fact that during this uncertain time, there will be something to expect and look forward to? It might be my duty, but I think that it is also everyone’s love.”
Overall, the note touched the hearts of millions of ARMYs across the globe.
On 12 December 2023, the translator, Anton Hur, took it to his X account (previously called Twitter), where he shared that the reason behind the decline was all due to his personal real-life experiences. It was not at all harsh from his side as he paid respect to the BTS group with a purple heart emoji.
Anton shared that he was incredibly ambivalent about military conscription in general. Why? That was because of his past experiences in serving in the Korean army. Not just because of that, but also for his “political very non-mainstream beliefs.”
In addition to this, Anton also shared a saddening incident, more precisely, a construction accident, which took place during his military service. It led to the accident of a couple of vertebrae. Also, his heel bones got destroyed. When he visited the medical experts, they said that it was more like magic that he survived without more suffering.
Anton’s suffering became so severe that the doctors shared that he was lucky enough to be able to walk. On this note, the translator said, “You can say I am in a very particular position to have an opinion on the matter of conscription.”
Understandably, Anton Hur was hurt to have gotten the request from the young fans to translate RM’s letter. He said, “It feels wrong for me to then translate a brave young man’s letter of giving comfort to his friends. I am sorry.”
Let’s not spread hatred. Concerning RM, we are eagerly waiting for his comeback to the Kpop fiel
