Safe to say that we’ve all been waiting for Reacher to come back to our screens. God, I hope they don’t mess this up. Ever since Reacher Season One came out, and was what I would describe as a faithful adaptation of the source material, which is a rarity these days. That source material is Lee Child’s debut book Killing Floor.
Reacher Season 2, however, will not be adapted for Die Trying, which is the second release book in the series back in 1998, which is a personal shame for me. But I think I can allude to why, as the basic premise has to do with militia wanting to secede from the United States Union, which, if you follow the news in the last few years, is probably a subject the showrunners want to stay away from.
Spoilers
Before diving into Reacher Season 2 Episode 1, let’s quickly talk about the show. Reacher Season 2 is based on the 11th book in the franchise called Bad Luck and Trouble. The trailer, if you have seen it, has already gone through most of the spoiler-free plot points, but I’ll just go over it for good measure.
As you probably know, Reacher’s skill set is that he’s a military investigator, a job for which he is incredibly gifted. However, he’s also not alone in this skill range. As depicted in the trailer, we have a team of 11 other investigators, and as the story unfolds, all of them start to mysteriously die one by one. Causing the remaining members, including Reacher to himself, to reunite in order to solve one last case together.
Now part of the reason the showrunners no doubt show this book is that it accelerates Reacher’s character development. For example, upon seeing how his old team has been getting on with their life, gaining promotions, etc, this causes him to have a little crisis of faith. He questions for a moment whether he should continue or not, just drifting for life.
Now, if they are faithful to the book, they will resolve this conundrum that he has in the very last episode of season two. However, without giving too much away, another reason this book could have been chosen is due to part of the plot that involves a very negative viewpoint of weapons manufacturing.
So I think there could be some personal preferences in messaging at play here, but that is just a speculation on my part.
I’ve got to say, just watching this, the casting choices seem to be good. Robert Patrick, for example, great great guy, is playing a character called Shane Langston, who is not a character from the novel. However, I’m guessing that this character is a name change due to the occupation that this new character has now. A lot more happened in previous episodes, but now let’s discuss when Episode 1 of Reacher Season 2 will be released and what will happen in it.
