Netflix’s Thai series My Daemon tells a heartwarming story about two different species trying to co-exist on the same planet. With 13 episodes in total, the Sci-fi and fantasy-themed series is filled with intriguing creatures and stunning animation.
Directed by Nat Yoswatananont, My Daemon revolves around a young boy named Kento Tachibana, who’s trying to revive his mom in a post-apocalyptic world filled with creatures called Daemons.
With his own little powerful Daemon, Anna, by his side, Kento goes on an interesting journey where he tries to show that humans and daemons can co-exist together if they decide to stop the war against each other.
Kento is voiced by Miyuri Shimabukuro, Anna by Kokoro Kikuchi, Kaoru by Fumika, Kaede by Ayane Sakura, and Kiriko by Naoya Miyase. My Daemon has been especially praised for its beautifully crafted animations along with an absorbing storyline.
My Daemon: What Happens In The Animated Series?
Kento Tachibana is an elementary school kid who lives in a world that is inhabited by strong creatures that also sometimes have supernatural powers. Calling themselves daemons, these monsters are at war with humans and are responsible for the death of thousands.
The planet wasn’t always like this; The ferocious creatures came to Earth after a nuclear explosion caused an element called Daemonium to show up on Earth’s surface. These strange sand-like particles then began evolving into different creatures.
Kento finds a weird piece of the element and decides to keep it with him. After a while, a cute little demon evolves from the sand, and Kento names it Anna. Tachibana’s very happy to see the birth of Anna, but things soon take a devastating turn when the higher-ups find out about the daemon.
Anna was a special storage daemon, a creature that could engulf anything in its past and send anyone into the endless void. Knowing how dangerous this could be, the daemon hunter group tries to take it away from Kento. However, during the chaos, it’s Kento’s mom, Kaoru, who ends up getting killed.
Saddened by the loss, Kento asks Anna to take his mother’s body inside the void until he’s able to come up with a way to bring her back to life. Kento soon hears about a being that has the power to control time and, therefore, be able to bring his mother back to life.
Tachibana soon sets out on a journey in search of this being, only to come across various kinds of humans, daemons, and other creatures in the process. One such friend he meets is Kaede, who tries her best to help Kento in his quest.
What makes Kento so different from other humans is his ability to communicate with daemons. This comes from the daemonium particles that are inside him, allowing him to act as a bridge between humans and daemons.
While Kaede is a great partner for Kento, her grandfather is the leader of a group called “Peace Organization,” which aims to kill all daemons and bring the earth back to its former glory. The group mischievously tests new things on captured daemons, tortures them, and uses them for their benefit.
Kaede’s grandpa had bitter feelings against all daemons after his daughter (Kaede’s mom) was sucked up into the void of a storage daemon along with the whole island she was staying at.
Anna, Kento, and Kaede set out for Kyushu, as that’s where a reversal daemon lives that could bring someone back to life by reversing time. After meeting tons of interesting people and friends along the way, Kento and Anna finally reach Kyushu.
Kiriko happens to run into Kento & Anna and brings them to his home, where he reveals that he is the one they’ve been looking for all this time. However, instead of being a time reversal daemon, he is a restoration daemon. These creatures specialize in bringing things back to their original forms.
Kento also discovers that Kiriko is a daemon living inside a human body. The daemon wanted to bring humans to their downfall for treating daemons so harshly all this time. Kiriko cleverly pretends to bring Kaoru’s body back to life and acts like Kento’s mother.
This was all in an attempt to get Kento on his side. When Kaede shows up, Kento’s delusion is finally broken. Kiriko soon restores Pandaemonium, one of the most dangerous daemons ever to exist. The daemon was solely responsible for the destruction of the US earlier in the series.
My Daemon: Ending Explained
As we approach the climax, the daemon that had been growing inside Kento finally hatches and joins Kento in his fight. Meanwhile, the government of Tokyo is preparing to shoot the demon with nuclear weapons.
Kento’s new daemon has the power to communicate as well as order nearby daemons to perform a task, so the daemon calls various other creatures to come and help humans who’ve been caught up in the mess left behind by Pandaemonium.
Anna transforms into her final form and uses her storage powers to engulf everything in sight, including the huge monster. Inside the void, Kento asks Kiriko to give up on his evil plans. Although not sure about Kento’s objectives, Kiriko finally gives in and forgives humans.
Kiriko says that he’ll be giving Kento a single chance to try to get daemons and humans to live together peacefully. If Kento’s plan fails, he’ll be coming back to Earth to continue where he left off. Before all of this, Kento also meets his mom within the void, but only for a short time.
Kento breaks down in tears seeing her alive, but Kaoru tells him that bringing someone back to life is against the rules of the world and it’s better to remember her memories and let her go peacefully.
Kaede catches a glimpse of the island that her mom was on while she was in the void, confirming the fact that all daemons share the same storage space and there could be a way to bring her mom back to life.
While leaving, Kento asks Anna to come along, but the daemons decide to stay inside, leaving Kento all alone. Kaede reveals her findings to her grandfather, who then decides to carry out research activities with the help of Anna, as they might one day finally be able to bring Kaede’s mom back to life.
Kento visits his mom’s grave, and the series ends with Anna calling out to Kento at the cemetery. The ending of My Daemons shows that Anna is still alive and will visit Kento occasionally. We’ll likely now see Kento working on closing the gap between humans and daemons.
Both of these creatures just misunderstood each other and for very valid reasons. However, with an open mind and heart, these two species could co-exist together and even create a society where they benefit each other immensely.
