What exactly happened in the early hours of the morning on 31st August? It was a Sunday, and Princess Diana was in a car with Dodi Al Fayed, her boyfriend at the time, along with her two other people.
One was Henri Paul, the car’s driver, while the other man, Trevor Rees-Jones, was her bodyguard. All four of them were in a car together heading to their destination when their car crashed suddenly.
Time stopped for all but one. Rees-Jones, Diana’s bodyguard, was the only survivor who came out alive from this car crash accident. The accident happened in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France, and Dodi and Henri Paul were found dead inside the crashed car.
Although years have passed and people are divided on their opinions related to the car crash, we can’t change what happened that day.
Princess Diana lost her life from the injuries she had sustained during the crash. But what happened before this accident? Was this accident really planned, or was it just fate?
Princess Diana was barely saved from the accident and was taken to a hospital quickly, but her heart stopped beating before they could do anything. Yet, the doctors tried in vain to save her but failed.
Diana And Dodi’s Vacation
It’s believed that Diana and Dodi were together on a yacht and later flew from Sardinia to Paris on the 30th, a day before the accident. The Princess of Wales was due back in London the next day, that is, 31st August 1997, but she never reached her final destination. If not for the accident, she would have been there with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who were returning from Balmoral Castle.
After the pair arrived in Paris, they went to Villa Windsor, and from there, they went to the Ritz Paris, which was owned by the Fayed family. During their time at the Ritz, it’s said that Dodi went to the Repossi jewelry shop located in Place Vendome.
The Princess was in Paris, yet the paparazzi couldn’t leave her alone. As per several reports, it’s believed that the couple had left the Ritz to dine at Chez Benoit but, due to the paps, couldn’t follow through with their original plan. They stayed in and ate dinner in private in the Imperial Suite. Later, they used the back entrance of the hotel for their exit.
Diana and Dodi left the Ritz shortly after midnight to go to Dodi’s apartment. Henri was driving the car, and nothing can be said for certain about his behavior that night. But, in the autopsy, it was revealed that Henri was drunk, which means he shouldn’t have been on the road with three other lives depending on him.
We shouldn’t forget that several people also believed that Dodi was going to propose that night. Dodi’s chauffeur, Henri, had a day off that day, and his drunken state on a day off made sense. But Dodi didn’t seem like a person who would take no for an answer, and that must be why he chose to drive them.
Princess Diana And Paparazzi
It’s terrifying to know that someone is capturing your every moment, and for Princess Diana, who was a famous face, it was more so. What’s worse is that even after an accident, the paps couldn’t stop and continued capturing the accident scene. It’s reported that seven photographers were even taken into police custody for behaving in such a vile manner.
It’s rumored that she cut short her vacation to shake off the media and paps, but she could barely win from these vultures. They also found her in Paris, and it was because of this she was eager to return to London as quickly as possible.
But she never reached her destination. She never met her boys, and today, she is gone. We can blame the media for playing their hand in this death, but the truth is no one really learns from their past mistakes. Some people mentioned that the driver was not a professional and might have been a bit nervous about the drive.
Others point out that neither Diana nor Dodi were wearing their seatbelts. It was a game of cat and mouse with the princess and the media always chasing her, but could she still be here had she just chosen to stay in the Ritz? Or if she had delayed her plans or just followed the original schedule?
At 3 AM, Princess Diana was pronounced dead, leaving the world in a state of shock and mourning.
