Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, well-known for their parts in several “Karate Kid” movies over the years, are collaborating on a new martial arts film.
The film, which is being produced by Sony Pictures and directed by Jonathan Entwistle from a script written by Rob Lieber, is slated to hit theaters on December 13, 2024.
Macchio will return to the role of Daniel LaRusso from the 1984 “Karate Kid” film trilogy, which he first played in the “Cobra Kai” series on Netflix. Plot specifics are currently unknown. In addition, Jackie Chan is coming back as Mr. Han, the kung fu expert who trained Jaden Smith’s Dre Parker in the 2010 remake and was modeled after Mr. Miyagi.
Officially, a new Karate Kid movie starring a variety of actors from earlier movies is in production. The original, which debuted in 1984 and starred Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi and Ralph Macchio as Daniel, became a classic.
Numerous sequels, a Netflix spinoff series, and a 2010 remake starring Jackie Chan and a young Jaden Smith have all been added to the Karate Kid franchise.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have started hunting for new Karate Kid
In addition to announcing the news, Chan and Macchio started a worldwide search for a new lead for the film in a YouTube video.
They invited aspiring actors from all over the world to use KarateKidCasting.com to submit their audition tapes.
Daniel has been played by Macchio in “Cobra Kai,” which has confirmed that this is the sixth and final season of the show. In “Cobra Kai,” which was written by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, the rivalry between middle-aged Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (played by William Zabka) is rekindled decades after the events of the original “Karate Kid” films.
What role the grand story of “Cobra Kai” will play in relation to the next “Karate Kid” film is still unknown.
What is coming in the new Karate Kid movie?
At this point, it’s unclear exactly what Macchio and Chan will be doing in the new Karate Kid story. It is anticipated that Chan will return to his role as the teacher from Karate Kid (2010), in which he played Mr. Han, a character who shared similarities with Mr. Miyagi.
Presumably, Macchio will make a comeback as Daniel, carrying on with his karate training as demonstrated in Cobra Kai, where he maintains the defensive karate teachings of Mr. Miyagi.
The Netflix series Cobra Kai’s sixth season comes to an end as the 2024 Karate Kid movie is revealed. The last season’s Netflix release date is still unknown, and it’s unclear if the events of season 6 will have an impact on the next film.
Updates regarding the Karate Kid movie are anticipated, despite the lack of information at this time.
Let’s rewind the Karate Kid History
Robert Mark Kamen is the creator of the American martial arts drama series The Karate Kid. The story follows several teenagers as they navigate the difficulties of puberty and learn how to face bullying and stand up for themselves in different contexts under the tutelage of experienced martial arts mentors.
The Karate Kid (1984) was the first movie in the original film series, which started as a tetralogy and had three sequels: The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994).
A 2010 reimagining kept the original title but changed the focus to kung fu and was set in China. It had a similar plot but new characters.
Released in late 2024, the sixth and as-yet-unnamed installment will star Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio in their respective roles. Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg’s Cobra Kai (2018–) is a direct continuation of the franchise that expands its universe thirty years after its inception.
It is accompanied by an animated series, video games that tie in, and a range of merchandise.
