As the release date of Aquaman and the Last Kingdom has been announced, the question about Amber Heard being a part of the DCU has also been raised. Viewers are wondering whether she’ll be a part of the upcoming movies or not.
It has been announced by the makers that Aquaman and the Last Kingdom will be released on December 22, 2023 (USA), starring Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Yahya Abdul-Ma (Black Manta), Amber Heard (Mera), Indya Moore (Karshon), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master), King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) as the main protagonists, and other celebrities as well. In this new DC series, people will witness Black Manta unleashing an ancient and malevolent force after getting defeated by his brother Aquaman in the last series.
Amber Heard had been facing obstacles in her career due to her defamation trial, which involved her husband, Johnny Deep. Holding her position in the industry and being a part of Aquaman was also one of the greatest obstacles she had to face. Henceforth, the audience is willing to know whether she’ll be seen in DCEU movies or not; even some DC fans are willing to see Emilia Clarke as Mera.
Will Amber Heard be further seen as Mera or in other movies?
Recently, Jason Momoa made an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, where he talked out little information about Aquaman and his being a part of it. Momoa confirmed that Aquaman 2 is his last appearance with this character of Aquaman; he won’t be continuing with the role even if there is any other part of the movie, and he also hinted that he’ll be possibly retiring from the Arthur Curry role as well.
It was heard that DCEU is not planning to have another series of Aquaman, which means that the fans will have to bid farewell to the fan-favorites Aquaman series as there are merely any chances for Aquaman 3 as DCEU is rebooting.
Even if there is a part of Aquaman, the cast will have to recast it as Momoa has already retired from the role, and the character of Mera (played by Amber Heard) will have to be recast just like the recasts of Superman, Batman, the Flash, and Lois Lane. The character of Mera had to face obstacles in securing its position in front of the audience, and even Amber and Mera were not getting along quite well.
The makers were not satisfied with Amber as Mera in Aquaman; the coming of Aquaman 3 would anyways won’t have been a career opportunity for her. Firstly, Heard’s on-screen chemistry with Aquaman (Jason) as Mera didn’t go the way it was expected. Secondly, some of her scenes were also removed from the revised Aquaman 2 script.
It was stated by former DC head Walter Hamada that based on her not-so-satisfactory on-screen chemistry with Jason in Aquaman, it was preferred that Heard be recast, but due to her prior contractual navigation, she was kept in Aquaman 2.
How Amber Heard’s divorce with Johnny Depp impacted her career
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp got married in 2015; later, their relationship became one of the most hot topics to be discussed on social media. The couple was accused of being abusive to each other, went through a publicized defamation trial, and finally got divorced in 2017.
While the defamation trial with her former husband Johnny Depp was going on, she also stated that due to her personal life issues, DC had released her from the contract and was referring to recasting someone else for Mera’s role in Aquaman 2, but she succeeded in pulling off this decision of theirs by issuing prior contractual navigation.
She had to face a black flash due to her loss in the trial, which brought obstacles to her career and also to her already cast role as Mera. It has had an immense effect on her opportunities in the industry, causing her difficulties in her career. Based on all these, it’s clear that even if there were any, Aquaman 3 Heard’s character would be recast.
