Nolan Grayson has shown up in Mark’s life out of nowhere, and the plot couldn’t have taken a better twist. Mark will not only have to handle his dad but also the countless other Viltrumites that are now after Invincible’s life.
First seen in 2021, Invincible is a superhero series based on the Image Comic universe created by Robert Kirkman. The story of this action-adventure series centers on Mark Grayson, a young adult who turns from a normal teenager into one of the most powerful superheroes in the galaxy.
After Nolan failed to get Mark into his plans, Nolan went far away into the galaxy. Mark’s now old enough to attend college, leaving Debbie all alone at home. Debbie’s still dealing with Nolan’s absence, but with Mark gone as well, the mother has been having a hard time coping alone in the city.
For the second season of Invincible, the cast consists of Steven Yeun voicing Mark Grayson, Sandra Oh voices Debbie, and Omni-Man is voiced by J.K. Simmons.
Recap
The 3rd episode begins with a flashback, where we see how the Viltrumites were attacking nearby planets and taking them under their control. One such planet was Unopa, which was taken over by Viltrumites, and they started killing all the native Unopians. This led to the creation of a powerful being called Allen.
Allen was the result of countless experiments from the military of Unopa in hopes of creating a being so powerful that they’d be able to withstand the Viltrumites in a fight.
Coming back to the present, we see that Allen comes back to his new planet home and informs the leader, Thadeus, about a strong half-Viltrumite on Earth that he believes could be used as a weapon against the rest of his kind.
Thadeus later calls Allen to discuss a new threat that they could be facing, a secret mole. He’s tasked with assassinating the mole at any cost. Just when he goes out, Allen is attacked by three Viltrumites, who want to know more about Mark. After being left for the dead, Allen is taken back to his planet and treated. Thadeus, however, secretly sabotages Allen’s healing.
Meanwhile, Mark is busy adjusting to his new college life. At the college, Mark is greeted by his favorite superhero, who later turns out to be an insectoid alien shapeshifting to attract Mark’s attention. The alien takes Mark to his home planet, Thraxa, where the ruler is none other than Nolan Grayson himself.
As for Debbie, she joined a therapy group in hopes of dealing with her recurring sadness. The support group also includes Green Ghost’s widower, who asks Debbie not to attend the therapy sessions anymore. After all, she’s the one who’s married to Omni-man.
Spoilers
The upcoming episode will likely pick off from episode 3’s major cliffhanger ending. Mark visits the mantis alien planet Thraxa, only to find out that they’re being ruled by his father, Nolan.
The mantis aliens of Thraxa have highly advanced shapeshifting skills, so it could also be possible that one of them is posing as Omni-man. Even if it’s the real Nolan, the reason why he called his son Thraxa also remains a mystery. Whether Allen is alive or not is also another question that remains unanswered after the recent episodes, so we’ll see more about the shady Thadeus sabotage in episode 4.
