In addition to being an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name, Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers is unmistakably the smaller streaming service’s response to Netflix’s massive historical romance drama Bridgerton. Of course, there are some key distinctions.
For example, whereas The Buccaneers is set in the 1870s and centres on a group of five American women who travel to England in search of suitors, Bridgerton’s first two seasons are set in the Regency era of England, which runs from 1811 to 1820 and mostly follows British folk.
The primary female lead, Nan St. George, has two suitors: the attractive Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers), who is London’s most eligible bachelor; and Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome), who is his charming best friend. The romance at the centre of The Buccaneers revolves around this relationship.
Recap
Nan and Conchita are riding in a carriage to the Duchess’s Private Ball. Conchita introduces Nan and her new fiancé, the Duke of Tintagel when they are travelling. Given how quickly time has passed and the fact that they have only met twice, Nan is understandably terrified, but Conchita advises her to take a chance. Nan did admit that she felt somewhat free with him, which is what made her say yes.
When Nan gets to the Duke’s house, she panics and dashes to the shore. After tracking her down, Theo advises her to take a chance on the evening. She is free to leave the Private Ball without facing any repercussions if she is unhappy with what transpires. Lord Seadown and Jinny surprise everyone by announcing their decision to get married when they arrive at the castle.
The announcement shocks everyone, and inside, Nan and Conchita talk about how they don’t think Jinny is truly thrilled. Theo’s mother confronts Nan, asking her to explain her love for her son and pressuring her to consider the role that marriage to Theo will play in society.
She acknowledges that she doesn’t know Theo and that she couldn’t possibly love him, but she has come to terms with the fact that Theo speaks about Nan as though he’s never talked about anyone else.
A sweet moment between Theo and Nan leads to the two of them riding horses down the beach. Nan loses control of the horse as she looks back and realizes Theo isn’t there. But before the horse tosses her off, Guy is there to support her. When Theo gets there, he presents Guy to Nan as his oldest buddy.
Nan confides in Jinny that she doesn’t even know who her mother is, therefore she’s not sure she can marry Theo. Jinny reassures her, telling her not to worry because no one knows.
Guy discovers they had given Nan the room he always slept in as Jinny rushes out. Guy responds that he has never lied to Theo when Nan asks whether he intends to tell Theo the truth about her mother. Guy warns her that Theo will become a laughingstock if everyone finds out about her mother.
Conchita battles Lord Richard at the Private Ball and decides to speak with his parents. They refuse to accept her charges and return them to her. She makes accusations against them. She storms out of the Ball as a result.
Nan is concerned that Guy may reveal her secret to him after learning that he and Theo are best friends. Despite their close friendship, Guy swears to keep Nan’s mother’s identity a secret from Theo. She then declares to Theo that she will wed him.
Spoilers
“Homecoming” is the title of the fourth episode, which will last 53 minutes. There will only be one episode of The Buccaneers released at a time until the finale, unlike the first week. While Theo is proposing to her, Nan struggles with the knowledge that Guy Thwarte has come back to visit her. Lord Seadown is still strict with Jinny. The wedding of Nan and Theo is being planned.
