If you’ve been left in awe of some of the world’s greatest architectural pieces and want to know more about the history and science behind them, then we have just the show for you. Abandoned Engineering is a reality series that brings to your screen a bunch of experts who dive deeper into why some of the buildings and architecture were left the way it is.
Experts on the show give fans an insight into what structures left half-built could’ve been if they had been worked upon till the end instead of the makers giving up on it, leaving them in dust, rust, and moss.
The series aired its first episode sometime in 2017 and has recently launched its twelfth one as well. With every season, the show has only become grander and more global, and this time won’t be any different as the cast travels all the way from Italy to South Korea just to bring us some more eerie structures with deep history.
The show takes its name seriously when trying to find more ‘abandoned engineering’ that may have been left touched and half-done around us, and the presenters on the show travel to a new place for every episode, trying to answer questions we most want to ask.
While exploring the site, the conversations usually explore the reason why the making of the structure was sanctioned, why it was abandoned, what would have been the cost of the failure, and its impact on society and the environment.
By the end of the episodes, we are also told what the experts think could possibly be done with the ruined structure to make it less of an ecological disaster and more of a useful site. Before you run to catch the new episodes of the series, make sure to read all about this season’s filming locations to know all about the places that the cast will visit.
Abandoned Engineering Filming Locations
Martinique, France
Also called the ‘Pearl of Achilles,’ this volcanic island belongs to the French and is located at the eastern end of the Caribbean waters. With low mountains making up stiff cliffs along the coast of the island, the crew of the show paid a visit to the Chateau Aubery, now a monument previously owned by Eugene Aubery in the twentieth century.
Italy
Once a hotspot amongst the Italian elites and now an abandoned region, the cast explored the Castel Volturno, a commune situated in Campania, along with an abandoned and eerie prison called the HMP Shepton Mallet, located in Somerset, England.
Poland and Croatia
The third episode of the show witnessed the crew traveling all the way from the Camp Hero State Park sitting in Montauk Point, New York, a proud Long Island spot, to salt mines located in Poland, Croatia, and Lewisham. What strange fate do these places share? You can find out all about it through the show.
Tbilisi, Georgia
Capital to the country of Georgia, Tbilisi seems to be a place that is no less than a dark fairyland. The crew will visit the grand Apollo Movie Theatre, which still stands as one of the oldest theatres in the country. What is the connection between this place and the Soviets? We shall find out in the upcoming episode.
Ireland, Europe
Located in a small part of Ireland, the crew will drop by an estate in the countryside that was owned by a family involved in a grand scheme of things, throwing them in the center of a national uproar.
Anchieta Island, Brazil
Flying to Brazil, the crew of Abandoned Engineering will also explore the Ilha Anchieta, a place with beautiful beaches, clear waters, undisturbed ecology, and nature at its finest. The place also holds immense historical value and might have been a scene of a “dramatic uprising.”
Seodaemun Prison, South Korea
A prison facility located in Seoul, South Korea, this location is one of the last ones that the crew will visit before wrapping up the series season. The place holds great history of those who sacrificed their lives trying to get South Korea its freedom. Also known as Korea’s Joan of Arc, this location will feature in the final episode of the series, so make sure to tune in.
