As they say, inspiration can be found anywhere. That’s exactly what happened with this new adult animated action streaming TV series, Blue Eye Samurai. The action fiction show aired on 3rd November 2023 on Netflix, but what inspired the show to come to life?
Co-created by the wife and husband duo Noizumi and Michael Green, Blue Eye Samurai first took birth when the couple welcomed their daughter into the world.
Noizumi, who is half-Japanese, mentioned that her daughter has blue eyes, and she was excited that the baby looked white, but why was that? It’s said that back in the Edo period, starting in 17th century Japan, it would’ve been illegal to be white, and nobody would’ve wanted to look white like that. Surprisingly, it’s not the same anymore. The couple was lost in their conversation when one of them said, “She’s like a little blue-eyed samurai”. This somehow sparked an idea, and Green, of course, wrote it down quickly because he knew it was a good title.
Green, who was a huge part of the show, says that he wanted the audience to be taken by the story as well as the level of artistry to the point that they forget they are watching animation. It should feel like they are a part of the journey. They should be that immersed in this action-fiction show.
What Is This New Animated Show About?
A hilarious, heartbreaking, dark, and gory yet beautiful show, Blue Eye Samurai is on its way to becoming one of the classic revenge tales. The show follows Mizu, a female mixed-race, blue-eyed samurai who is hell-bent on seeking revenge on those responsible for the death of her mother.
The show begins with Mizu, the lone-wold warrior who gets stuck with an unexpected travel companion and must forge her way ahead, facing the challenges on her way. On her revenge quest, she meets Ringo, Taigen, and Princess Akemi, who become a part of her mission.
It’s said in 17th Century Japan, borders were closed to the outside world, which meant that nobody saw a face that wasn’t Japanese. This isolation from the world didn’t mean that other people weren’t there. There were rare cases of “foreigners” due to illegal trade. The outsiders and their children were considered to be monsters, impure, and less than human compared to those who were born with “Japanese” blood and face and color.
Mizu, who knows that there were only four white men in Japan when she was born, wants to kill all of these four men. One out of these four men ought to be her father, the person who turned her into a creature of shame.
What she wants isn’t unrealistic, but since she’s a girl, she is forced to hide her eyes as well as her gender with a disguise. Her blue eyes are the reason why she is considered the child of a white devil, and women mustn’t get involved in violence, so there’s no way for Mizu to achieve what she wants without using a disguise. But will she succeed?
Blue Eye Samurai: Which Stars Got A Role In This Show?
The main cast of Blue Eye Samurai includes Maya Erskine as Mizu, Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen, and Masi Oka as Ringo. If the show renews, we can expect to see these faces along with some other new faces.
