The latest episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s afterlife science-fiction dramedy series starring Robbie Amell. Upload season 3 have been quite a ride, it’s hard to keep up, and kudos to Amell for playing the same role in so many different facets. Kind of reminds you of Peter Sellers when he did Dr. Strangelove with Kubrick, but in different accretions, movie fans, don’t get me wrong, it’s just a fun comparison!
In our recap, which contains spoilers for the context you’ll find that the latest episode might’ve taken a few inspirations from Harry Potter’s memories and flashbacks narratives, but the scriptwriters spun those around to make it work for their own show. In any case, pay attention to the Nathans because there are several of them, and if you skip a moment of the episode, you’ll start to wonder which Nate is which.
Recap
This episode is titled “Memory Crackers” and it kicks off with the Nathans getting closer as they approach Lakeview. Viv pops up on a call and tells how Ivan sent a hard drive belonging to Choak.
Now, bear in mind, that there are several versions of the same characters here, so we’ll begin with Nathan v.1, he calls Nora but he can’t reach her. Nathan v.1 and Nathan v.2 are concerned. So Luke mocks her because apparently “she’s too much of a big deal”. Luke tells them that he feels very lonely, and now that Nathan v.1 and Nathan v.2 are together the two seem to give him some solace and comfort.
The next thing Nora knows, Aleesha has told her that she is dead. In fact, she is not dead. Karina has drugged her and sent her to Fakeview, a showroom, where she plans to question her about why she is following Dr. Kapoor around.
She lies to Aleesha and gets her to help her while she drugs Nora in secret to get her to do what she wants. Aliesha tells her friend to be quiet while Karina questions her about being an “angel.”
It doesn’t help to question Nora, and Karina concludes that she doesn’t know anything. Nathan finally gets Nora’s call. She is on a park and can’t remember anything because two men have cornered her.
Now, Nathan has a talk with Ingrid and he’s concerned about being a human photocopy. This makes me wonder if the scriptwriters took some inspiration from Michael Keaton’s flick “Multiplicity”, but that’s another story. In any case, Nathan the copy is angry and doesn’t do anything nor he says sh*t about what he knows to give the real Nathan (remember, there are many Nathans here) some help.
Nathan v.1 will try to use an IR to try and capture Choak’s memories and Nathan v.2, Nora the “Angel” and he will sift through those memories as though they were Dumbledore’s pensieve all the while Luke keeps an eye out.
When Ingrid is upset, she gets drunk and yells at an AI bartender about how Backup Nathan likes Nora too. She does not want the typical flowery bartending advice. Instead, the AI tells her straight out to be honest and deal with the results of her actions, which inspires her.
New Nathan and Nora become close as they make fun of Old Nathan for sleeping over at his ex-boyfriend Holden’s house and not telling Nora who she is at first. Original Nathan ends the call because he is annoyed. When Nathan v.2 is by himself, he and Nora flirt before she realizes it and leaves.
In the real world, Holden calms her down by telling her that it’s not cheating because Nathan v.2 is still Nathan. It’s confusing, I know. I watched this episode twice to make sense of it all.
Nathan, who is on backup, assures Luke that he is proud of himself, and Luke gets him excited. At the exact same moment, Nathan v.1 contacts Luke to tell him that he feels unsafe having Nora and Backup Nathan by themselves. All three of their complicated feelings are put on hold while Nathan discovers a Choak memory.
It’s about passing a law that lets Uploads work. Norea feels bad when she spots Karina in the memory.
Ingrid, who had a few too many drinks, arrives at the IR courtesy of Viv. She urges Nathan to keep Nora in check and offers Backup Nathan as support. Meanwhile, Karina presents Aleesha with a bouquet of roses, leaving her with mixed emotions. When Aleesha seeks assistance from Luke, they converse about his mother, resulting in tears shed for the two Nathans.
At the IR, Ingrid confides in Nathan, revealing her hidden secret. Overwhelmed with emotion, tears flow as she expresses how Nora always takes precedence over her, regardless of the circumstances. They share a drink, engaging in conversation about life’s hardships. Ingrid assures Nathan that even in his darkest moments, she still holds affection for him. Laughter fills the air as he admits to currently being in his most challenging state.
Nathan v.2 and Nora talk at the same time over each other. He doesn’t like that Ingrid lied to him. She is glad, though, that Ingrid cloned his body in secret. They check in with Nathan from the beginning and see Ingrid there offering to help. Then, all four of them see a flashback of Choak with Oliver, Ingrid’s dad. Again, this reminds me so much of Harry Potter and the Pensieve…
To save about half a billion bucks, Choak wants to get rid of live employees and replace them with Upload employees. As a joke, Oliver says that if Ingrid had died with Nathan, his bank account would be in better shape too. They hang up the phone as Ingrid starts to cry. Nathan v.1 finds out that she wants someone to be proud of how hard she works.
They hug and he says he’s proud. When he stops her, she tries to hit on him but backs off while still mocking him. Backup Nathan and Nora, on the other hand, are envious of Ingrid and Original Nathan. Not long ago, Nathan tried to kiss Nora, but she stopped him. She says she has chosen Original Nathan no matter what. He gets it, and now he thinks of Nathan v.1 as a brother too.
He should love Ingrid because she is loyal and passionate, even if she is a little strange, just like she is. Backup Nathan kisses Nora on the forehead at the end of the episode.
