Time and space are a fabric, a delicate one that, if you’re too lazy of a scriptwriter, can mess up your character development story and ratings. Luckily for Loki Season 2 Episode 6, that concept is one that we see with strong fundamentals as the writers try to put together the show for us.
With all the multiverse en-vogue things from all major production companies, it can get tiresome, but if you have a concept of how these things move, you’ll get an idea. I must confess that the idea of the multiverse, that going back and forth in time, is something that science fiction likes to develop. But as Isaac Asimov once said: “The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction must make sense”.
With Loki traveling through time and space, and with the TVA narrative and these time loops we sort of get into a mix-up of what’s ahead, and what’s behind. Still, Loki’s sophomore season has been chockful of easter eggs, surprises, and things we need to watch carefully to fully grasp MCU phase five.
Recap
Episode five of Loki’s sophomore season, aptly titled “Science/Fiction” focuses on the characters from the TVA. This episode takes into consideration the ups and downs of time travel, time slippage, and how traveling back and forth in space and time creates alternate universes. This is a central theme to this episode in which Loki navigates the TVA.
Furthermore, the TVA, if you’ve paid attention to the show’s and MCU’s narrative, is sort of a prison for our main character, as it constantly pulls him back either for captivity —he’s been naughty— or for duty.
He Who Remains Is A Bit Of A Time Slippage Construct
Now, as for “He Who Remains”, he might’ve orchestrated the buildup of the whole TVA concept as it is —in a Christopher Nolan-Interstellar, Robert Zemeckis’s-“Back To The Future Way— a sort of branched timeline, that involves characters like Victor. This idea of a “sacred timeline” connects to how “He Who Remains” shows up in the series’s narrative, if you factor these things in, that’s the only reason why “He Who Remains” exists in this branched timeline.
Looping In And Out
This brings us to the idea of time looping, like “Inception’s ‘Dream within a Dream'”, it’s obvious that the writers took inspiration from all the ideas of time travel from Hollywood to bring this narrative together. Like the initial episode titled “Ouroboros”, the snake eats itself perpetually in an infinite circle.
Loki might be able to break all these time loops, as it is crucial for the character development story within the TVA history.
We see how Loki recruits several people for a mission to bring back, to restore, to put together the TVA. Who are these characters? Mobius, Casey, and B-15.
Now, the episode concludes with the disintegration, the wiping, and the destruction of reality around the characters, which implies chaos implies things that are unpredictable. After all, if you play with the dynamics of space and time just as Loki’s been toying with, there are definite consequences from that.
What arises is the shift in the narrative that Loki’s scriptwriters are trying to take us through. Loki does manage to slip back through the fabric of time and space, and he does so in a conscious way.
Now, can Loki control these events? That is up for grabs. It is sort of the midseason cliffhanger. This kind of narrative puts Loki as the ultimate mastermind who can defeat any challenge his way.
