KBS’s latest comedy series, The Matchmakers is a one-of-a-kind show starring Rowoon and Cho Yi Hyun where we see the hilarious interactions between two matchmakers who happen to meet by accident.
Matchmakers everywhere play an important role in bringing together soulmates and it was high time they got a show of their own. Taking place in the Joseon era, The Matchmakers centers on the grumpy and frustrated Sim Jung Woo and the sweet but clever Jung Soon Deok.
Besides Rowoon and Cho Yi Hyun, the rest of the cast of The Matchmakers includes Jo Han Chul as the King, Lee Ye Joo plays Bok Hee, Park Ji Young plays Park So Hyun and Lee Hae Young portrays Jo Young Bae.
Most of the cast that we’re used to seeing in period Kdramas have made their appearance in this series as well. What sets The Matchmakers apart from other dramas is its main theme, which is exaggerated comedy with a touch of romance to spice things up.
The Matchmakers: About The Show
Sim Jung Woo’s a handsome and intelligent man who tops the exams despite his young age. While he is being appointed as a government official, the King’s daughter falls for him and decides she’ll only be marrying Jung Woo.
Jung Woo is reluctant at first, but when his family sells him off for other profits, he has no other choice but to marry the princess. Before he could even consummate his marriage, the princess suddenly dies right after the wedding rituals.
This leaves Jung Woo as a widow who never experienced what real marriage felt like. Jung Soon Deok is a widow as well and spends her time playing matchmaker for influential families.
Since Soon Deok belongs to a reputed family, she works under the name of Yeo Joo Daek, so her in-laws and others won’t ever find out about her secret job. Once Lady Yeo Joo gets ahold of a task, she makes sure that the couple is married at any cost.
Yeo Joo works as a peddler and sells cosmetics while working as a matchmaker all around the town. Instead of mindless pairing, Yeo Joo has a special innate ability to find out true soulmates.
After a series of unfortunate events lead Sim Jung Woo to play matchmaker as well, the duo decides to group and become the best matchmakers in Hanyang, while also developing a connection between themselves.
Both Sim Jung Woo and Jung Soon Deok start pairing older single couples who had lost all hope of ever finding a partner in this lifetime, giving us many awkward situations filled with lighthearted comedy.

All-new episodes of this comic melodrama will be coming out on Mondays and Tuesdays, with each episode lasting for a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes. The Matchmakers’ will have around 16 episodes for its first-ever season.

The Matchmakers’ unique filming style and comedy scenes make it a slow-paced but intriguing series about two people who end up working together under unexpected circumstances.
While the romance is secondary to the comical dialogues between Sim Jung Woo and Jung Soon Deok, we do get to see a relationship blossom between them over time.
