Previously, we saw that Kuma relieves the suffering of the people of Sorbet Kingdom, absorbing it himself. Ginny supports the elderly and scorns the selfish King Bekori. Kuma refuses Ginny’s marriage proposal, fearing to burden her. He dreams of a life like Dragon’s. Now, fans are super excited to find out what is going to happen next in the upcoming One Piece Chapter 1098.
The chapter opens 8 years after the God Valley incident in South Blue’s Sorbet Kingdom. Kuma is now 17 and has become a pastor, using his Paw-Paw fruit powers to heal the elderly by removing their pain – a technique the people call his “Miracle Hand”.
Ginny is now 21 and has grown into a kind yet stern young woman, popular with the local boys. She scolds some elderly people camping in the church but shows compassion when needed. The citizens discuss the cruel new King Bekori, who forces even the sick to pay him tribute despite his wealth.
The chapter provides an update on Kuma and Ginny’s lives since the God Valley incident and introduces the tyrannical new king who will likely drive the chapter’s conflict.
Recap and Review
The chapter then shows that King Bekori is secretly listening in on the citizens’ conversations about him through a wiretap. His reaction is unclear – he is blushing but it is not specified if this is from anger or something else.
Kuma assures the people he can heal their minor pains and illnesses every week with his powers. However, fans are aware that the accumulated pain Kuma takes on must be dealt with somehow.
So, while Kuma is helping the citizens, the wiretap indicates the tyrannical Bekori will likely cause problems soon. The chapter builds tension around the cruel king’s reaction to criticism and foreshadows trouble arising from Kuma’s healing powers.
The chapter shows Kuma accumulating a paw bubble of pain the size of Luffy’s back in Thriller Bark, having taken on the suffering of the villagers. Like Zoro, Kuma shoulders the pain alone without telling anyone. Ginny cries seeing this, saying Kuma does it weekly. Kuma explains the pain would just return to the people if he didn’t absorb it.
Kuma says he’s happy to suffer temporarily if it means the people he helped are happy. The story then jumps 5 years ahead – Kuma is now 22 and Ginny is 26. Ginny asks Kuma to marry her but he refuses, angering her into pressuring him.
The chapter reveals the toll of Kuma’s powers, with him taking on pain to help the villagers, similar to Zoro. Years later, Ginny’s proposal is rejected, setting up the conflict from her reactions and the consequences of Kuma’s suffering.
Kuma cares for Ginny but doesn’t want to marry her, as he remembers the tragic past of his own parents and doesn’t want to cause Ginny similar pain. He changes the subject, talking excitedly about Dragon and his Freedom Army, calling Dragon a hero. Kuma shares his dream to go to sea and save people like Dragon.
The chapter then jumps 3 years ahead, where two boys who bullied Kuma, including one named Gyugyu, now have crushes on Ginny and bring fish to their home.
After a “big incident” occurs, 25-year-old Kuma confronts the king’s army, who claim the law allows them to “use” the southern people – meaning slavery. Angry at this injustice, Kuma attacks Ursus Shock to free the kidnapped citizens.
Major events include Kuma rejecting Ginny to protect her, foreshadowing his future at sea, and clashing with the army to stop slavery – highlighting his compassion and heroic dreams.
